Since English was a second language to them, they did not help me with my homework when I was in elementary school.
My older sister and my teachers did most of the teaching.
What about you?

My parents don't speak English either, at least not enough to help with school work. I'm the oldest so I didn't have older siblings to help either. My mom did make me memorize the multiplication table in Chinese shortly after starting kindergarten so I guess she helped with that.

My parents couldn't help too much with English since it was their second language but they helped a lot with math.

English was also not their first language so they could only help up until 3rd grade or so. And then I took Mandarin in high school so they helped with that.

@BoogieBea: That chinese multiplication table was my best friend in school! 25 years after I learned it, I still remember it!

I didn't have homework in elementary school.
But once I hit middle school (and on up through high school) my dad always helped me with math, until I got to pre-calc and AP calc and he couldn't help me anymore! My mom would proofread things like essays and papers. She also quizzed me / helped me study for tests. Very helpful, my parents.

My parents checked my work and made me redo wrong problems until middle school. I think it was helpful.

We went to french school and my parents don't speak french so they didn't help much. They did the best they could when we asked. Often I would read the questions to them in english, they would help, and I would write the answer in french.

My Mom helped me whenever I needed help - all the way through High School. Most of the time I needed help just calming down enough to pay attention to the problem and realize I actually could figure it out on my own.

Like many of you, English was not my parents' first language either. I learned to be resourceful and got phone numbers of all of the smart people in class, and then I would call them for help!

I never thought about how hard it would be for parents that didn't speak the same language for homework.
I never had help with homework, my mom was a firm believer that we had to figure it out. I could always go with questions, but she never sat down and did HW w/ me.
My younger brother though... he got a little more help, but I think he needed it more. She also typed all of his papers through high school and still fills out his paperwork for work. I fuss at her all the time b/c she never did that kind of stuff for me
Ohhhh to be the baby in the house!

Yes, until I got to jr. high school and then I was on my own as they couldn't remember the harder stuff. I was lucky and didn't need it, and then I helped my younger sister when she hit it since school came easier to me than her.

My parents were really helpful. I mean, they never just fed us answers, but my mom would help me with math and would proofread my papers, and my dad would help me with history / social studies, things like that.

My parents helped out a lot. My mom would help with the creative stuff and my dad would always help with the math and science stuff. I actually smile when I think back on the times when my dad would help me out and I hope to have that kind of impact on DD.

My parents went to an English university, but English is not their primary language. I stopped asking my dad for help with hw in 3rd grade, after he gave me an algebra lecture (!) after I asked for help with a math assignment. Mom helped more by making us sit down to do hw, but not with the actual work.
