I didn't.
If I remember right I just filled out basic address, insurance info at pre-registration, and then was given all the "rules" type stuff when I was admitted. But I was in transition already and in so much pain that dh took the papers and stuff and we rushed through it as quick as possible to get me the epi..

We had to do ours in advance! I think I got them in the mail 6 weeks before my due date and was instructed to complete and return them ASAP. Papers regarding the epidural specifically were handed to me at an OB appointment and she told me to complete them even though I didn't plan on getting an epidural.
Still had to sign my name about 100 times while in active labor though!!

I went to L&D with preterm labor and I was shocked by how much I had to sign - especially since I was already pre-registered and they were using all of my information from that. I don't even remember really looking at them - I also kept signing things for "Infant Lastname," which was causing me sheer panic. I kept thinking to myself, "I'm 27 weeks, why do I have to sign for all this?"

I had a planned section so I did take the time to read the fine print and ask questions. Otherwise, I don't think I would have!

We did all of that in advance - I don't remember signing anything when I arrived at the hospital in labor.

My maternity clinic was in the hospital, so there was nothing to do when I arrived. The only thing was DH at some point was asked whether I wanted a shared room or private room for an additional $240/night and he kindly elected the free option despite the fact that my insurance covers private.

@cmomma17: @Mrs. Jump Rope: @wonderstruck: I am definitely doing things differently with our next child. I think a lot of hospitals (correct me if I'm wrong!) have similar patient rights and rules but it's a little scary to think of what I might have signed off on without knowing it. I trusted my doctor (and it's in the plans to have a dr I trust again next time) and my insurance wouldn't have covered most hospitals in my area, and overall I had a good experience, but reminiscing on the what ifs I'm sort of surprised at myself!

I didn't read the fine print on anything I didn't get in advance.
We completed and submitted our pre-registration packet complete with details like father's employer's street address. I remember becoming enraged when they asked us all those questions again at check-in. Luckily I brought a copy of the packet and handed it to the clerk. Ain't nobody got time for that in labor.

@BakerBee: I think it's standard procedure. I was in L&D this week and they asked me my birth plan should I deliver that day.
I was like, I don't have a birth plan. I'm super busy today. Make these contractions stop.

I refused to sign anything until I had the time to read it carefully and with a clear mind.
They tried to make my DH sign instead (out in the hallway) and he said "Unless my wife is unconscious, decisions regarding her body are hers to make, not mine. You can wait for her to sign."

I'm wondering if I didn't think it was a lot or if I really didn't have to sign a lot? I remember preregistration online...mostly my basic info and then there were 3 forms at induction and that was it. Huh. Either way...I never read anything.

The only thing I had to sign in L&D was the epidural paperwork, as everything else had been in my preregistration materials. I read all of the fine print as any good attorney would

@Arden: Good for you! I think personally I have to do it ahead of time. I think if I don't I will make the same decisions in the moment again, unless maybe my labor is a lot shorter. It's all a blur but I remember feeling at the end of my rope.

With M I did...but it was a planned c section so I wanted to know the details.
Other 2 I didn't. There wasn't any for S and after she passed I didn't care what I was signing. With D I just didn't read.

I didn't even read it. My glasses were off and I was hooked up to too many things. It was hard enough to sign the damn thing.

I just wanted to get the babies the F out both times, I didn't care. Not much you can do to change their legalese as it is.

My OB tried to go over a consent form point by point with me at the very end until a nurse finally noticed that I was barely conscious and couldn't even focus my eyes on him. To this day I'm not even sure what the consent form was for. What did I sign? (And if I didn't sign would they have kept the baby in there?)
