Almost everyone is on social media these days--even my grandparents!
Are announcements necessary/worth the expense?

We did! But DH has a lot of older relatives, that aren't on FB. Plus I just love getting them so I figure others do as well. We ordered ours for our photographer, 75 for $85 with shipping. Not bad for double sided ones.

We didn't. Anyone who was out of town got either a text, email or saw him on Facebook!

I did. I know everyone is on social media, but I wanted to send them the same way I send birthday cards to my friends even though I can (and still do) post on their walls.
Mine weren't super fancy. I used pictures I took at 5 days old and got them from Shutterfly during a sale (which seems to happen a lot.)

We did! We did with our first because we were so excited and then I made myself with my second, but it was just so he had one in his baby book! I didn't want him growing up and saying "How come my sister has a birth announcement and I don't?" I might be more sensitive to that because I'm the middle child.

LO obviously isn't here yet, but we're planning on it (even though everyone we know uses some form of social media). I think they're a sweet memento! I love receiving them and putting them up on the fridge

I plan to-- I love receiving them and they are a nice keepsake. My parents have some birth announcements on their fridge that are a few years old!
@MamaBehr: I'm a middle child too, and I would totally think that way!

we didn't send an announcement, but i think they're very sweet and love receiving them.

We did - I love getting them too! We heard from a lot of people who were thrilled because "no one sends them anymore."

We did - I thought it would be nice to send a "formal" announcement in the mail and I'm a sucker for having things to put in the scrapbook. I took the pic myself and did it on Shutterfly.

We sent out paperless post announcements. I don't know anyone without an email these days.

I didn't. I was so overwhelmed as a new mom I couldn't have managed to send them even if I wanted to. And I can say this now that I'm a mom - in general not a fan of newborn pics. Newborns kind of creep me out. Much prefer when they've filled out a bit, around the 10-12wk mark.

We did. Not only do I love pretty paper and like having it for her baby book, but it seems appropriate to me. It wouldn't have felt right to me to use Facebook or email as the only means of communication about other major life events, like my wedding or graduations, etc. and I felt the same about her birth. Then again, I still send Christmas cards too

We got 100 free post cards from vistaprint. I love getting mail so I also love sending mail. And I was able to send to people who aren't online. I sent to everyone who gave lo a gift, including my grandmas friends. I know they loved them.... they all called my grandma, and then she got to brag about lo

We did! I'm a graphic designer so I pretty much had to

We did. Although our family is mostly on FB, we wanted to share our newborn photos of our little guy. We plan on sending them out for #2 as well

We did. We had pictures taken in the hospital and birth announcements were part of the package.

Love paper! We designed them, I took the photos and we sent them out. Love having them up.

Nope! We're broke as a joke. The money was better spent on formula + diapers. I do love announcements though! I love getting them.

Yes! It was so pricey, but I love how nice they look and love having it to save for her baby book!

Yep! Shutterfly sale and off they went. It was a few months before they went out, I would address a few each day I had the energy. My goal was to mail them before I went back to work full time

I did and for me it was worth it. We didn't even use a picture, but it was just how I wanted it.

We won't. I don't think we have ever received a birth announcement. I think if it were more commonplace to do so, we might consider it. I love sending proper mail!

We did. I had a coupon for 10 free announcements from Tiny Prints so I got the go ahead to do it. I wasn't going to but now I'm glad I did - I have a memento to put in her baby book!

We're going to, I'm just waiting to get the newborn photos back from the photographer. We have a lot of relatives and family friends who aren't on social media, and I think that hard copy announcements are a nice keepsake.

We did but I didn't do it until she was a month old. I do monthly photo shoots with her so I used her one month pictures. I'm glad I waited because she looked a lot more like 'her' than the squishy, swollen pics from the hospital. I ordered them on Tiny Prints. The price was a bit more but I thought the quality was a lot better than other sites I've done invites on.
