I don't think it's necessary but my husband wants to and my sister thinks we have to.
As a side note, the place we are having the party requires us to have a liquor license if we serve alcohol.

We are serving beer and wine, but we are having a party at home. I definitely don't think you have to! I wanted to have alcohol mostly because my parents and in-laws will be there! ;P

We served beer and it was at home. But in your case since you have to purchase a liquor license I wouldn't.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
A liquor license? that's a hassle.
I will totally have beer at least, though. But serving it at home is differenmt
coconut / 8305 posts
Nope. We don't drink anymore but even when I did I thought it really inappropriate to have alcohol at a kids party. Just always rubbed me the wrong way. (ETA: I can't let anyone leave from a function I hold or my home intoxicated in good conscience)
I definitely wouldn't do it if I had to pay extra to be able to either. Boo that!

@MusicaV: That sounds odd that they would require the person renting the space to have a liquor license - those can take months to come by and are usually only available commercially.
We had ours at home, so we had beer and wine available.

We served beer and wine since it was at my parent's house. It wasn't a big deal for us.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
Most likely yes in the form of a champagbe punch or sangria. Most of the attendees will be adults. All of the first birthday parties and little kid parties where the guests are primarily family or friends of the parents alcohol is served.
ETA: I wouldn't get a license just to serve alcohol. A couple hours with lemonade is not going to hurt anyone.

if it meant getting a liquor license, i wouldn't serve alcohol. i don't think it's a necessity at a children's party, even though it would be nice to have. that's too bad they require it.
ETA: if others, like your DH, are willing to go through the process of obtaining the license and purchasing the alcohol, then that's fine but i don't think you *need* to.

Yeah, I wouldn't go to the trouble of getting a liquor license. If that wasn't a factor, depending on your guest list, it could be nice but not a necessity either way. At LO's party, it'll definitely be more adults without children than adults with children, so we'll probably serve some drinks. I would think if it's mostly parents and young children, they wouldn't miss it.

We had our party at a local cafe and alcohol was available for purchase if our guests wanted it. We didn't think we should provide an open bar for a 1-year-old's birthday party.
If I had to get a liquor license I wouldn't serve alcohol.

If I had to get a license, I wouldn't. We had it at home and served beer and wine.

We are planning on having beer & wine, but it is at home. I would not deal with a liquor license...not worth the hassle in my mind! I think guest can handle a couple hours without alcohol!

I'm sure the "liquor license" in question is a banquet permit, which is $10 and you can get it in 2 minute from your local liquor store.
We served beer and wine. No one really touched the wine but people drank beer. I think it's nice to have the option, especially if the party is later in the afternoon.

We'll be having her party at home and it will also be a holiday open house so we'll definitely be serving alcohol.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
We will since her party will be at home. Will be beer and wine. If I had to get a liquor license, then nope.

No. Especially if I had to get a license.
I personally enjoy beer/wine but there is a history of abuse with some of my extended family members so we avoid it at extended family events.

We served champagne (and had beer/wine available since the party was at our house). Most of the children's parties we go to serve alcohol; not serving is definitely the exception.
In your case though, i would probably forgo alcohol. The license might be hard to get and might require you to carry event insurance and/or hire a licensed bartender - too much hassle IMO!
grapefruit / 4400 posts
Yes, we did-- beer, white wine (it was hot), champagne. I would look into how easy it would be to get the license... if it's a hassle, I wouldn't bother.
pineapple / 12566 posts
We just did a little party at home with grandparents and definitely uncorked some champagne!

We had a small family party..I think DH bought beer for his dad.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
Yep...it was a backyard BBQ and what BBQ isn't complete without beer and wine?!
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
We did, but like PP's we had it at our house so there was beer/wine available anyhow. I don't know if I'd bother getting a license though.

We served beer and wine at our DD's 1st bday party. It was really more like a party for us, though, to celebrate getting to our first year of parenthood. Future parties will be more child-centered, so no alcohol.
coconut / 8279 posts
We had the party at a restaurant. If anyone wanted liquor they could walk out to the bar, but we didn't offer it. Open bar at a first birthday sounded like a bad idea to me, lol
nectarine / 2274 posts
No we did not, but all of our family and friends are not big drinkers.
grapefruit / 4120 posts
Absolutely LOL - well, just beer. We didn't let him have any. Ha!
Anyway I'm happy to toast anyone for surviving a year of parenthood!

His birthday is on New Year's Eve so, yes. Party favors were bubbles for the kids and "bubbles" (champagne) for the adults.
coconut / 8475 posts
@runsyellowlites: ditto.
No. I don't see why alcohol should be at a 1 year old's birthday party. In your case, I wouldn't take the extra effort to get it.

DD's party was at a restaurant and most of our guests were adults--we had an open bar.
DS' party will be at the club house in our building. We're catering brunch, so mostly likely no alcohol. I might have some champagne available so people can make mimosas.
persimmon / 1147 posts
We had her party at home so we got some beer to serve but we didn't want to go crazy because I felt that would be inappropriate. Since you have to go through the trouble of a license though I would say forget it. No one would think otherwise IMO.
nectarine / 2667 posts
We sure will! My husband and I feel like this party is 20% celebrating our son's birth and 80% celebrating making through the first year as parents, & we generally celebrate with alcohol.
But it's going to be at our house and I don't think it's a "need" to do. Especially if you have to go out of your way to get a liquor license.
pomegranate / 3388 posts
I don't think it's necessary... but I think we did have stuff to make mimosas.

@MusicaV: we had ours at home and served beer and wine.
I know at my wedding venue we has to obtain a liquor license. It was so NOT a big deal to get a one day liquor license...and I don't remember it costing very much at all. I don't think it's a big deal if you choose to serve alcohol or not but just wanted to let you know it wasn't difficult or expensive for us to get ours.
coconut / 8681 posts
Ours will be at our home, a backyard BBQ, and I don't think we will be serving alcohol. Most of our friends enjoy a beer once in a while when we're hanging out and DH works for a beer company but we don't really see a reason to have it at our son's first birthday.
