Food was a big expense at LO 2's first party. (There was booze and other beverages but FIL provided it.) I want to do appetizers and cake for future parties but DH is against it because most of our friends drive a long way to get to us.
Do you always expect meals at a LO's party? Would the distance you are traveling change your answer?

If I'm going to a hosted party where gifts are given, such as birthdays, house warming, showers, engagement parties etc, then yes, I expect that food will be provided.
If the party is more of a neutral occasion where the hosts are really just kind enough to have it at their house, like Superbowl, Oscar viewing, or other random theme parties, I don't expect that there will be a full meal and always ask what I can contribute in terms of food and beverages.

I am constantly going to children's parties now that DD is in school and the adults are rarely served a meal. It popular to have parties at 2 or 3 pm so you can just serve snacks, maybe pizza for the kids, and cake.

Up to a certain age, yes. Now as my son is getting older, the parties are more focused on activities for the kids, so I would be okay without a full meal UNLESS the party was scheduled for a meal time.

I would always provide SOME sort of food at any party I host. Depending on the time, either real meal food, or appetizers. But I think you need to at least have SOMETHING.

I feel like there's a big difference between appetizers and a full meal. I always expect that there will be a spread of food at parties, but whether attendees make a meal out of it is kind of up to them. So I think if you provide a bunch of appetizers and dips and party-type food, you'll satisfy people.

I, personally, think apps, cake and drinks is fine. We did do a full lunch at C's 1st birthday though.

I served full meals, but I love to host parties and that's probably what I will always do.
I recently went to a party that was 2:00-4:30 (I get that it's in between lunch and dinner) but they had NOTHING to eat or drink except for birthday cake and water. I was very grumpy about this. IMO, they should have at least had a veggie tray or something!

I'd expect at least apps. I do heavy apps, usually. For her second birthday we're doing sliders, fries, and a few apps.

I wouldn't mind if I went to party and it was only appetizers and cake {regardless of distance}, but I would never host a party and serve only that.
