We have a big yard and I love it. However we are new to owning our own big lawn and it's a lot of upkeep. I don't think I'd ever trade it though...ask me in a few years

I'd definitely like to have enough space to have people over for BBQ's and to have some sort of swing set. A pool would be nice too, but that's not completely necessary.

We do. For a while I had a huge one as a kid and I dream of having such a large, fun space for my son. Sadly if we want to stay in the area we are that will never happen.

I'm also from Southern Cali and grew up with a small yard. When we first started house hunting, I wanted acreage! But then we realized how difficult it would be to maintain it and over here it also meant the city didn't maintain the roads since it would be out in the middle of nowhere.

We ended up with a pretty decent size yard, big in comparison to SoCal, small compared to what we were originally looking for. But it's definitely enough for DD to run around and for us to have a veggie patch and some trees. I'm pretty happy with the size. As for upkeep, DD enjoys maintaining the grass and digging around. I'm not gonna lie - weeds grow like crazy! It's barely even spring here and I know we've already lost the fight on various parts of the yard because I'm only focusing on the front this year. But if I did more yard work, it wouldn't be fun at all!

We have a heavily wooded 3./4 acre now but would LOVE an acre+ of nice flat grass with some privacy woods. We don't mind the upkeep, it keeps us active!

I hate mowing or losing DH to 3+ hours of mowing, so I would want a big yard if I had a gardener lol. A pool? Yes! But yeah a big enough backyard for the kids would be nice.

We have a good sized back yard, but we don't make it fancy. We have a big dog so he needs a place to run around, and it's nice for LO to chase the dog around

We would like up to an acre of "workable" land and a bunch of acres of wooded land in our dream home. In our current home, we have 1/4 acre and we have already landscaped a lot of it. My husband enjoys yard work. Me? Not so much. I will do manual labor when needed, though.

Also, keeping up with grass in the south is so hard, it just doesn't like to grow! We have a small front yard and the grass there looks great. Our backyard is mostly grassy weeds but we're doing what we can to make it look decent by mulching more and more each year.

@mrbee, you boys did a LOT in your yard!! I didn't do much yard work (any) as a kid.

I don't want a big back yard - too much upkeep and we are not outdoorsy. We have a big deck and medium sized yard that abuts a nature preserve so it's the bet of both worlds. The upkeep isn't bad, and if LO wants to go running wild over acres of land she can do so and I don't have to mow it or weed it!!

I want at least an acre in my dream home. Right now we have a little over 1/4 acre and it's a nice layout, it's enough room for the dogs to wrestle and LO to play around in. We have a lot of garden space and between that and not using chemicals on our lawn it's been a lot of work this spring to get it back into shape, but we both really like being outside and gardening so its fine.

I would love one. I grew up with 6 acres to play on. We had so much space to run around and play. I'd love for my kids to have the same thing.

Yep...when we buy a house, we're planning on getting a few acres. We have dogs and DS and we really want to be able to be playing baseball in the backyard. The maintenance isn't an issue with us. DH loves doing yardwork.

we have dogs so having a yard would make our lives sooooo much easier! plus we'd love to be able to grill outside. after living in city apartments for the past decade, I cannot wait until we move somewhere with a yard!

I would choose a smaller house with a big backyard over a big house with a small backyard.

I'm a fan of a big backyard because there's plenty of room for kids to play and adults to enjoy some outdoor stuff too!

We currently have zero backyard space because it's taken up by the pool. Ugh! When we went house hunting, we agreed upon no pool, and yet, here we are.

@Alivoo01: we just went to an open house and the house was ok, not great, but when we saw that the entire backyard was taken up by a pool we said "dealbreaker" and left!

Yup, it was a huge deciding factor on staying here instead of moving back to NYC and in which neighborhood we bought our forever home in.

Yes. Ideally though we would have a large fenced in back yard! We have a small fenced in back yard right now, but with a Lab/mix dog with budles of energy, I wish we had more room for him to run around in!

I grew up in a city, and had a backyard that was concrete(my brother literally cuts the lawn with a weed whacker!) and I don't want that for our kids. I would like a decent yard so they have room to play and run. we also would like room for a pool and nice swing set.
