At 3 months postpartum I started losing craploads of hair... I'm 4.5m pp now and it's still going on. I know it's normal but I feel like at this rate, I'm going to end up bald. What was your experience?

Yes! With my first it started around 4 months and went for 3m +!
This time it started around 2m. She's 5m now and still going strong.
Chopping your hair helps!!

Yes. SO badly. I started losing it around 6months pp I think? I'm 19 months now and certain spots are finally starting to grow back... ugh.
pomegranate / 3706 posts
Yep- all the hair around my hairline, especially at my temples, fell out both times, somewhere between the 3-4 month mark. That was it though, no other crazy shedding.

So much hair fell out. Started around 4 months and lasted forever! C is 18 months now and the regrowth is only a few inches long. It is so annoying. But I sucked at remembering be to take my prenatal vitamins after birth while breastfeeding. I wonder if that would have helped.
pomelo / 5524 posts
I could have made a wig with the amount of hair I lost. It lasted up until 9 months PP.
pineapple / 12234 posts
Yes! So much. It just stopped at 6 months pp. I now have tons of untamable baby hairs.
honeydew / 7283 posts
Yes! I'm 10 weeks pp and it's already started. Last time I think it was much later.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
yes, I lost a lot from 3-7 months after LO 1 and 4-8 for LO 2.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
yeah it looked ridiculous around my hairline. all these little whispies and things sticking up.
pomelo / 5607 posts
I didn't, but I got pregnant again at 4 months postpartum and THEN I started shedding like crazy. I have no idea if it was the old pregnancy or the new one.
pomegranate / 3779 posts
Yes, from 3-7 months I had a ton of hair falling out. Then it started growing back in and looked awful for several months because I had all this short hair sticking out around my hairline.

Started around 4 months pp and lasted until 10 months pp. It sucked.

Hoooooly cats, I didn't realize this was a real thing. Does it ever NOT grow back??

I'm 9mos pp and it is still falling out like crazy. And now LO also knows how to pull my hair so I tell him all the time he's going to have a bald mommy.
pear / 1657 posts
Yep. Started at 3mos post partum and I think it has finally stopped at 8 mos pp. I now have all of these little baby hairs at my hair line. I got bangs to hide them also getting tons more grays coming in now

I did with my older daughter! I had to buy a trap for the tub. With my newborn I'm using a different shampoo and no shedding aside from the normal few strands a day.

@smith: Yes, I think it is because hair has a definitive life cycle. They all kind of sync up, so when they are due to fall out naturally, everything tends to fall out at the same time. It also happens to people under an enormous amount of stress and those who crash diet.
Mine stopped falling out around 6 months postpartum.

oh.my.goodness. yes. I normally shed a lot as it is, and about 3 months pp, the shedding was out of control. Now it's not as bad and I have a lot of shorter strands now growing back and it sticks up. Too short to tame with hairspray or gel. Real nice. lol.

Yes! The amount of hair loss is really crazy. I have an appt tomorrow to get my hair cut. I read that the hair loss can last up to a year.
apricot / 329 posts
Yes - mine fell out from 3-6 month pp. It got SUPER thick during pregnancy, though -- essentially it stops falling out on its normal cycle while you're pregant, then post-partum all the hair that should have fallen out during the previous year falls out all at once. It does grow back, but usually on its own cycle, so more gradually. My big sister though said her hair was never as thick after her first baby than it had been before. Not sure if that's true, but it was certainly her perception.

With my first I did. I thought I was very sick or something because I would lose so much and no one had mentioned this happens.
GOLD / wonderful pea / 17697 posts
Yep, started around 3 months and lasted until 6 months before tapering off.
papaya / 10343 posts
I lost a ton of hair from like 2.5 mo until 5 mo pp. It was disgusting and I felt bald. Now I'm almost 9mo pp and I have all these ridiculous 1 inch long hairs regrowing everywhere, especially noticeable around my hairline. It's super hot.
pomegranate / 3716 posts
Ugh, I just noticed a week ago that there is so much more hair on the bathroom floor and in the tub drain catcher! I'm about 4 months pp...
pineapple / 12566 posts
Yep. With both of my LOs it started around 5 months PP and continued 2-3 months.
@blackbird: gah! I have this still! All the little whispies around my face are finally growing back in, so I just look like I stuck my finger in a socket most of the time since they are about 2 inches long and cannot be tamed!
persimmon / 1458 posts
Yes, I experienced this with both of my children and it stinks because I have thin hair to begin with. I can't quite remember how long it lasted with my first but this time around it was much shorter. This time it was only from about 3-6 months.
kiwi / 659 posts
Ughh yes. It lasted from 3-9 months pp. As it fell out, it started growing back in the lovely spiky 'bangs' Now at 13 months pp the regrowth is getting longer... One of the many pp joys !
coffee bean / 28 posts
I'm about 3.5 months pp and it just started happening last week. Holy crap, it is everywhere! And it's gross. I feel like I can't keep this rate up much longer or I'll be bald!
watermelon / 14467 posts
Yes, it was pretty bad. I normally shed a lot because I have a lot of hair, but this was unreal and I had to clean my drain after every shower. It finally slowed down around 8 months pp. I made sure to get regular cuts to help.
persimmon / 1386 posts
Yup. Not sure when it started, but I think it had started to taper off about when I got pregnant again at 8 months PP. And I totally have lots of short hairs from it growing back now.
cherry / 231 posts
I lost so much hair! I was losing it in all the typical old man places like my temples and the top of my head. It was not cute. I was really self conscious about it, though DH claimed he never noticed until I mentioned it. The best was when it started to grow back and I had these random tufts of hair sticking out everywhere. Oh the pp joys.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@Ms. RV: i use Ava Anderson - totally non toxic. I only have to wash every 3rd day too, and before I had to daily or I looked like a grease ball!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
Oh yeah. Like, I thought it was a joke when people said they were losing handfuls...not a joke...
eggplant / 11287 posts
So bad. It got worse both times. It didn't ease up until 7 months pp, maybe later.
nectarine / 2932 posts
Going through it now. I am honestly shocked I have any hair left. I mean, clumps and clumps of it are gone. My LO is almost 5 months..it started right at 3 months.
