We did for LO but we never thought about it for the baby. We assumed that her name was too short for a nickname but we were wrong and we use it almost exclusively at home!

We did! And that's why we chose and short, one syllable name. My mom tried to nickname him but we put the kibosh on that pretty swiftly.

Yes, We picked P's name because we loved the nickname as much as the full name. But, my sisters started calling her "poopie" when she was tiny, and now that she is talking, she tries to say her name and says "poo poo". So, we call her poo poo a lot now, too. Oops.

We thought about it, but his name is so short, it doesn't work. We originally wanted a name that could be nicknamed, but just didn't happen.
clementine / 811 posts
Yes we are, but more for how he or she might be teased in the future when paired with our last name.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Yep! We planned his nickname right from the start and almost exclusively use it!
pomegranate / 3890 posts
yup we made sure we liked nicknames that his name could be shortened to. we mostly use his full name but i do call him by his 2 nicknames sometimes.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
Yes! I made sure I couldn't do anything horrible with her name
I probably missed some, but kids will be teased regardless! Only so much I can do
honeydew / 7091 posts
There were a couple names I came up with because I liked the nickname first, and wanted a longer name to go with it.
We didn't choose any of those, and now DD has a name that doesn't really lend itself to a nick name.

Yup. I always disliked not having a good nickname so I wanted my kids to have options!
pineapple / 12793 posts
We picked a really rare first name that shares a nickname with a top ten name. I love her full name and am happy that she has a cute and familiar nickname.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
We picked a name that is quite short and doesn't have a true nickname. My husband was really concerned about nicknames. I wanted to name LO Catherine but he was insistant that she would be nicknamed Cathey and he didn't like that at all! So Catherine is her middle name instead : )
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I don't think you can control it, really. I mean you can name your kid Gordon and his schoolmates call him Sting.
honeydew / 7811 posts
We choose a name that is not nick-name-y. However, we have somehow ended up almost exclusively calling LO "Boo-boo" at home.
No idea how it even started!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@MamaMoose: I call our LO her name minus the "y" (or that nn with an "s" added on) all the time. Love them
coconut / 8279 posts
@bpcmarj: we have a cat with the same name as your DD and we call her 'poopie', lol

DH and I consider the mean nicknames kids could come up with at school. Some newish names today are so susceptible to that.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@lawbee11: We do it with the "s" all the time!! And our families do too and we think it's so cute! I just mean she doesn't have a nickname where she would be in a situation where a school teacher would assume to call her anything other than her given name. Whereas a school teacher may have just called her Cathey or Kate or Katie if we named her Catherine.

We thought about it- we didn't need to have a nickname but if there was a nickname we had to like it. I always wanted a nickname and never really had one. C's name doesn't really have a nn.
@Adira: I love your name/nn combo and seriously considered it if c was a boy.
pear / 1799 posts
We are thinking about that now. We love the name Rosalie for a girl, but there are SO many nicknames: Rose, Rosa, Ro, Rosie ... Maybe one or two more I can't think of. I like the idea of having a nickname, but having 4? That's a lot!!
persimmon / 1328 posts
Yes, and we still consider nicknames for her even though she is 10.5 months old. She has a short name, but it is just long enough that we could shorten it up if we wanted. Not sure if we ever will though.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@MamaMoose: Ahh gotcha. Yeah, Catherine has a ton of possibilities.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
As someone who is naming obsessed I thought of all nickname possibilities. I absolutely hate that some people call our older daughter CeeCee, but we knew it was a risk when we chose the name. She hates it too and will correct kids when she can

@oliviaoblivia: Ditto!!
Her full first name is unranked, but the nickname we often use is very common these days (one of the blogger bees has a little girl with the same name). I love both of them - and her other nicknames that have, of course, emerged.
pomegranate / 3895 posts
Yep. We knew from the start DD would be called by a short form of her name instead of the full name (at least while she's a little girl). I love her nickname..it's totally classic and lovely
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
Yep. But we couldn't come up with any. I am sure some kid will though.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
Yes! it was important to me that we choose a name with a nickname. All my favorite names have nicknames.
Cobi was actually on my short list, but DH wanted a longer name, so Jacobi fit the bill perfectly.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@Smurfette: Rae? I have a friend who has Rae in her name and me and our friends call her Rae-Rae.
cantaloupe / 6869 posts
Yes, I love the potential nicknames for both of our name possibilities!
pear / 1992 posts
@Mrs. Pen: My best friend is a Rachel who goes by Rae! I had originally wanted a Mallory who we would call Ree
honeydew / 7811 posts
@Adira: I just sat here for like ten minutes thinking "what's a nickname for X?" lol
(used "x" in case you weren't sharing his name on non-gold threads)
coconut / 8681 posts
Yepp!!! We thought about it with #1 and chose a name that we liked the potential nickname for. At 13 months no one has called him by the nn yet though!
For DD considering nicknames actually helped (??) us nix manyyyy girl E names that we originally liked from our list.
bananas / 9118 posts
Yes, all part of the design for our short list! C was originally going to be Will Raymond.... but one night at dinner my husband looked up at me and just said "Billy Ray" after bursting into fits of laughter in the middle of the restaurant, we knew if we went with that one, we would forever hear Achy Breaky heart at the beach from my husband's dad and uncle. Deal breaker.
So we went with names we would be fine using the nicknames with- I hate with a passion the nickname that goes with my name, so I really wanted nicknames we could live with. We'll do the same for #2, if we ever figure out names we like.
