I put a sign out-please don't ring the doorbell, our newborn is sleeping. Since I wasn't leaving the house with the baby I was ordering a ton of stuff online AND we were getting a lot of flowers and other deliveries. I got so pissed when I saw a little kid (of reading age) ringing the doorbell over and over again--when I went to go check the mail after he left, either someone jacked my sign or it blew off my door!! good thing i didn't open it and let him have it.

We have a sign too. I had to put it up after UPS delivered a package at 9 pm and rang the doorbell not once but twice

I don't like the idea of a sign advertising that there is a baby in the home so I'll probably just have hubs teach me how to switch it off when baby is sleeping.

I put up a little post-it note beside the doorbell saying not to ring the bell and leave the package by the garage. I'd say 95% of the time they obey my note. Sometimes they forget. So far so good though!

@MamaMoose: you could just put up a sign saying so not ring doorbell instead.,, but I think it'd be easier to just turn it off.

@PrincessBaby: at our old place you couldn't hear the doorbell from upstairs so I didn't worry about it and hardly anyone ever came over.
How do you check who is at the door without them seeing you?

We didn't have visitors until two weeks, and even then, we're only now having most people at six weeks and older. We were busy! As for deliveries, etc., they just knocked and LO slept through it. The few visitors we had, LO got passed around anyway. Oh well!

I get the dog barking thing, but the doorbell has never woken up LO. Especially little babies ... they sleep right through that kind of stuff 99 percent of the time.

I have a sign at eye level saying "DO NOT RING BELL, sleeping baby. Deliveries: if signature is needed, please knock SOFTLY." Then I also have a piece of cardstock covering the actual doorbell button that says "don't ring me."

We never bothered with a sign and LO has never woken up as a result of the doorbell being rung. I've read in a few different places that it's better for babies to be exposed to different noises whilst sleeping so that they don't become dependent on silence in order to fall asleep or stay asleep.

I don't TRY to make lots of noise when LO is sleeping, but I also don't go out of my way to stifle any noise either. If I need to vacuum whilst she's napping, so be it - it has yet to wake her. Same thing with DH doing the leaf blowing etc. She's a fantastic sleeper and I think it's because she doesn't wake up for inadvertent noises.

ETA: Like a PP, we do make things a bit quieter at night as we want her to know the difference between night and day, but during the day, it's normal activities for us.

@prettylizy: Same! My three dogs go absolutely nuts whenever they hear anything.

I put up a sign saying pls don't ring the doorbell, but the dogs still bark when they hear someone at the door. They go less crazy than if the doorbell rang, though. Then all hell would break loose.

Good thing is, L got used to all the noise when she was a newborn so now she can sleep pretty well even when there's a ruckus.

No, when LO was a newborn he would sleep through anything. Now is a different story though- if someone starts hammering during nap time I get so annoyed because he is such a light sleeper.

No, never been a problem. When he was a newborn he could sleep through a tornado... or a Frankenstorm

All of the mama friends I know (and myself included) have a sign taped over the doorbell saying, "Please knock."
