I heard some do and some don't.
Did you use one or plan to use one?
I have one for the girl but need to get one for the boy.

No. Unnecessary and not worth the risk in my opinion. My daughter moves tons in her sleep and I have only had to rescue her from getting stuck 2-3 times in 18 months.

I'm not going to. Lucie's List had a blurb that mesh bumpers are not any better than the fluffy fabric ones according to APA.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Oh, really?? I should look into this before I buy the other one.

We have one for lo #1 but didn't put it in until he was almost 1. I want to get another one for lo#2 so her arms stop getting stuck!

Nope. Never had a problem with LO sticking her hands or feet through the slots and getting stuck.
kiwi / 706 posts
Nope and he's never been stuck! Post swaddled we kept him in a sleep sack a freakishly long time...that might have helped.
pear / 1547 posts
Nope. Agree with PP not work the risk. LO loves sticking limbs through the crib and has just learned how to unstick them herself. I've only had to rescue her a couple times as she learned.

We used it with both kids. He seems to kick more and I would think he would get kinda wedged.
Either way you dont really need them until they start to move a bit so you may have a bit of time.

We used one for LO1 and planned to for LO2 but I haven't gotten around to putting it in the crib. We've just started having him sleep in the crib for the first stretch at night now at 3.5 months, but he learned to roll this past weekend so he's very active in the crib and lays with his face against the side a lot. He gets his limbs stuck sometimes, but I'd be more worried if he was up against the bumper, so I think I'll be leaving it out this time around.

We used one for LO 1 because she got stuck a few times. Never used one for LO 2 so I gave it to a friend.

Nope. Getting a limb stuck is a lot better than being strangled by a bumper.
pomegranate / 3768 posts
Yup! She kept getting her limbs stuck. Going to use it for DD2 too if she starts sticking her legs out.
pomegranate / 3438 posts
The first 6 months we didn't use a bumper at all. When he started crawling he kept getting his legs and arms stuck and would scream bloody murder. So we used a bumper until about a year. At a year old he started squishing it down to stand on so we took it out and he didn't get any limbs stuck after that.

No and also stuck one time in 3 years. I don't think any risks are worth it.

LO not here yet but we will not use them. Our (soon to be ped), the hospital, childbirth/baby care class have all told us that they are not recommended by the AAP. Their position is that anything in the crib other than a tight fitted sheet increases the risk of SIDS. So, he can get his arms stuck - not worth the risk!

@MrsADS: Oh, good to know. Yeah, I think I'll return it. Thanks.

we were given one but no, didn't use it for either boys. they've only been stuck once each, and it wasn't a big deal.

We used one with DD1 but not until she was just about a year old and constantly getting her leg stuck between the bars. We did not use one with DD2 at all as she has never gotten stuck.
Both girls were in a PnP with mesh sides for their first seven and nine months respectively anyway as they slept in our room until that point, so it was a nonissue for us until after that.
I can't quite visualise what the risk is with them though... Ours was mesh and velcroed together - I cannot for the life of me figure out how it would have been a risk to a baby....

Never needed them- she never got stuck or slammed her head on the crib. I was open to it if it was really needed it but I really never did.
@Ree723: I believe it's more of a strangulation risk than suffocation? I'm not exactly sure but I recall Mrs. Jacks posting about it at some point.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@Ree723: @Foodnerd81: From what I read here in this thread, I thought it was a SIDS risk since better airflow can help prevent SIDS.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@bluestriped bee: but if it's mesh, like the side of a pack and play, I'm not sure how that would be a risk. But, again, I never used one and never researched it much!
Eta: but for a traditional fluffy bumper, yes, definitely a suffocation risk for sids.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@Foodnerd81: yeah, I don't know. Same with co-sleepers, don't they have mesh sides? Maybe it has to do with the sides being shorter so there's more airflow.

We didn't use it until way later, and only to keep pacis in the crib.
cherry / 223 posts
I put one around DD's crib when she was around 7 or 8 months because she was getting her legs firmly stuck between the bars at least twice a night. It seems like it's on there really tight so I'm comfortable using it.
pomegranate / 3658 posts
Not planning to, since as others have said, a stuck limb is better than suffocation or strangulation. LO is still wearing a Merlin suit though, so that keeps her from moving around much at this point.
papaya / 10343 posts
No. There is a strangulation risk. And it just seems unnecessary. She went through a "limbs stuck in the bars" phase but that lasted like... 2 weeks. I have her paci on a paci clip attached to her. I don't see what purpose they really serve.
persimmon / 1367 posts
We just started using one at 9.5 months, but we are using it because we lowered the crib and realized that there is an electrical outlet in the center of every wall of LO's tiny room, and she could theoretically reach it regardless of where we put the crib. It is a few inches below the mattress so she would really have to dig down, but putting up the crib bumper gave me an extra measure of security. With it, there is no possible way for her to reach down and pull gov the outlet covers. Not that she's able to pull them off anyway, but still...
