I figure its one of the things that needs to get washed before use, like LOs clothes, but I'd had to do that and not be able to return it if we don't like it!

I didn't. I bought mine out of desperation when LO was going through a phase of wanting me to carry her all the time. I had no time to wait to wash it!!

I didn't - I'm a big proponent of not washing before you know for absolute sure you're going to use something. Baby was fully dressed the first time I used it, so I wasn't worried about it.

i have a k'tan and didn't wash it before using it. i didn't think about it--i know, i'm a terrible parent.
