My bump app (the height of scientific integrity 
) claims that only 10% of births have the water break on its own. That seems super low to me so I thought I would take a poll 
Mine broke both times at home - basically marking the change from early to active labor. First time was a huge gush, second was a series of them.

2 babies,,,both times water was broken.
*Once at 8 cm after about 5-6 hours of laboring...baby was born about 1-2 hours later.
*Second, I was induced, Pit for 4 hours little to no progress, water was broken at 5cm (was 3.5 before induction)...baby was out 45 mins later

My water broke with a huge gush about 30 mins after contractions started. Contractions were very, very mild before my water broke, though - I didn't think I was in actual labor.

true for me! 2 babies, both induced for different reasons:
lo1 was born en caul
lo2 my ob accidentally broke my water while doing a cervical check after I'd already been on pitocin for like 10 hours, she was about to suggest breaking my water as the next step, haha

With my first, my water broke after being on pitocin for a while. The OB thought she was going to have to break it, but it happened just before I got my epidural.

Mine broke at a newborn care class when I was 36+6. I guess he decided we didn’t need to know whatever the instructor was going to cover that night

@skinnycow: that’s how my second went. I was up in the middle of the night cleaning, packing lo’s lunch for school, etc with no problem. Then my water broke and it got painful really fast!

scheduled c-section, I was afraid of my water breaking because one of my many problems was polyhydraminos making me measure 5 weeks ahead and I could have ended up with a prolapsed cord. He was already causing enough problems being transverse or breech depending on the day in the last couple weeks.

LO1 - It was broken at the hospital since I was induced
LO2 - It broke itself, but not full blown, it slowly leaked

I think the 10% statistic refers to water breaking as the first sign of labor, not to water breaking on its own at any point during labor? That's what I've always learned and taught.
My water broke during pushing.

Mine was broken at the start of an induction at 42 weeks and then I was given pitocin. I didn’t start having noticeable contractions for 3 hours. With my second my water broke spontaneously at home and then I had mild contractions an hour later. After two hours my contractions were 30-60 seconds long and 2-4 minutes apart. Very different than my induction.

Both times. First time huge gush of water and no contractions for till hours later. Second time, I felt wet all day but never felt any leaking. I didn't call cause I had an appointment the next day. But I woke up at 4 to pee, had a contraction while peeing and then realized my liner was wet. Contractions were every 6-7 mins then but it was a slow leak that time.

I didn't respond since I don't know ;). My water broke before I realized I was in labor, I also had ruptured and was leaking for more than 12 hours before it fully broke. Even after it broke, I did not notice the contractions.

DD1 my provider broke it (I was induced). I had her I think 1-2 hours later?
DD2 it broke on its own. I had been having sort of irregular contractions but strong enough that I went in. I was I think 2cm at 7:30am so they sent me to walk the halls for 4 hours. Not sure if I’ve ever been as excited as when my water broke in the hallway at 8:15-8:30amafter walking for like 8 minutes! A nearby nurse said “You go girl!” I felt like I was in a movie. She was born at 9:53am.

My midwife broke it for me at 9cm, and then had to break it a second time (??) when I was pushing.

With my first we don't really know when it broke. I never came out so my OB kept trying to break it, but she couldn't (my poor nugget came out with a scratched head from the OB's attempts). It all came rushing out behind that baby after she was delivered. So by the time my water broke the baby was basically corckscrewed in so tight that it couldn't come out. With my second it was the start of labor. I rolled over in bed and felt a big leak.

@bhbee: Mine did. Very unexpectedly at 36w5d. I feel like the "naturally occurring" water break rates are low because this country's obstetrical practitioners (US) have an obsession with inducing women and breaking their water.

both times my water broke before i ever felt contractions. it also happened in in the middle of the night and so i waited until the next afternoon to go in to the hospital, still no contractions, so was induced both times (resulting in c sections after another 24-36 hours of induction).

LO1 - was induced, OB broke water
LO2 - went into labor naturally, OB broke water at 7 or 8cm

Woke up at 5am and felt a pop. It wasn't a huge gush, more like I was peeing myself for an hour straight 
Contractions immediately started 2-3mins apart and very intense. I went from 0-10cm in just a few hours, but pushed for manyyyyy hours. He was out exactly 12 hours after my water broke.

Lo1 was amniotomy.
Lo2.... I was lying down on the couch, my toddler son came over and patted my belly saying baby, and woosh my water broke. 39 weeks.

LO1: Broke well into labor but LO’s head blocked the release of water. The doctor had to release the water by pushing LO back in.
LO2: No idea. I wore depends to the hospital but they were dry when I changed into the hospital gown. I remember being disappointed thinking I must not be very far along. Then I climbed up on the triage table and got the ok to push. I asked the OB about my waters afterwards but she didn’t really give me an answer.

All three times my water broke when I was in labor in the hospital. Twice my provider broke for me and the last time it broke on it's own after I got my epidural.

Yep, it refers to water breaking as the first sign of labor.
That said, my first two babies my water broke as the first sign of labor, and my third baby my water had to be broken by like eight or 9 cm

LO1: Water broke as first sign of labor. Between a slow leak and a gush. Contractions started on their own.
L02: Water was broken during induction. After 4-5 hours of pitocin, I was 5 cm.
FWIW my mom had this same combination, although her second was induced only by having her water broken, no pitocin.

Both of mine had labor start with my waters breaking. First I didn’t have contractions for an hour or so, second, they started immediately.

I have twice had my water break as the first sign of labour.
With A my water broke and then contractions started a few hours later
With K my water broke and contractions started very strong within minutes.
There was no signs of going into labour before my water broke.

With my first, water breaking was the first sign of labor, although looking back I had other signs but didn't know it at the time. Contractions got strong and fast after that.
With my second, I had light contractions all day. I could still talk through them and sleep so I didn't think much about it. Then my water broke, things got intense and moved quickly.

My doctor broke it for me to start my induction. I was at 4cm but no contractions. 5 hrs after they broke my water I had my daughter and never needed pitocin.

4 kids and waters broke naturally for all 4. it broke during labor for my two singletons and it broke before I went into labor with twin A. After she was born twin B’s water broke while pushing (he‘s 4 minutes younger than his twin sister).

My 2 births were basically the 2 extremes in this aspect! With my first, my water broke first and contractions didn't start on their own, eventually was put on pitocin many hours later. Second birth, got all the way to 10cm and dr broke my water - baby out 5 minutes later!
