Mine didn't! I think parents might have protested if they had because the school had such a competitive focus.

We had sewing in middle school and in high school they offered Fashion I, II, III and Independent Study. Its where my love of sewing and designing blossomed.

My high school, not that I recall. We did have a print shop and an autobody shop.

It did. I never took it because I was college prep instead of tech prep.

Yup. But I went to an academic/tech high school. You could take all sorts of stuff like autobody, welding, commercial food prep, home ec, hairstyling/esthetician courses

My high school didn't, but my elementary school did! We took sewing, woodworking and gardening classes, which I'm really grateful for in retrospect! I also took a home ec class for six weeks in junior high.

Not high school. In 8th grade we took home ec. I was so excited because I saw how everyone made those cute stuffed animals. Well our teacher was out the entire time I was in home ec(it was half a year, and the other half we took wood shop) so we had a substitue. We did nothing! I was so bummed

Only in junior high - it was that or typing for the girls, and the boys could do wood shop or typing. Gender stereotyping was alive an well back then!

Just middle school, but our school didn't have the facilities so we were bussed out. I also don't believe we had the option to do or not do home ec.

Yes, but I was on the college prep/AP track and couldn't take it as an elective.

I was homeschooled so yes lol. I learned to sew, cook, budget etc.

Kind of. It was called "Life Skills" and I remember at least a cooking unit. They also taught us how to write checks, and I think some basic hygiene. Everyone was required to take it!

My school had home ec in 7th grade. I remember making a sweatshirt, stuffed animal and a lot of sandwich pocket meals

Yep. In middle school it was home ec but in high school it was called family, food and nutrition and was based mostly on culinary. I took it every year cause I loved it.

We had it in middle school too. We did have wood and auto shop and a child care course in high school though. There may have been others that I forget.
papaya / 10560 posts
yes, i took it because i need a semester long class. it was only cooking though. different classes were devoted to sewing, etc.

In high school we had elective classes like Fashion, textiles (knitting, crocheting, quilting, etc) interior decorating, and cooking. My high school had a big focus on vocational training so you could also take courses like welding, automotives, accounting, and entrepreneurship where you had to open your own business for the semester. You could also get credit for taking a job/internship and during the last period you could leave school to go to work.

It was called Family & Consumer Sciences, and I was a big part of it. There was a club attached, FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America used to be FHA), which I was a very active member in, including being a the state VP my senior year of HS. Fond memories!

In middle school, we did. Grade 7 was cooking and grade 8 was sewing. There was a "Foods and Nutrition" class offered for a year or two when I was in HS, but apparently it was a joke.

It was called family and consumer science snd there were many different courses. I took two, one called parenting which let you take the baby robot home, and another called independent living which focused on budgeting, meal planning, cooking, using checking and savings accounts. I think that class should be required for everyone, honestly.

It was an elective in junior high, but I was in band so I never got to take it.
In high school there were separate classes for home-EC type curriculum - Foods I and II, Sewing I and II, Consumer Finance, Parenting, Interior Design, Shop, Car Mechanics, etc.
I went to a very large public high school.

Yup! I took general home-ec in middle school and some specialized classes in high school (gourmet foods, sewing) I loved it!!

@LemonLong: my high school was similar. I took a lot of AP classes, and my senior year I needed a "chill out" class so I took gourmet foods, lol.
