My daughter's full size mattress arrived yesterday and it smells terrible. It's kind of like a new car chemical smell.
We are trying to air it out now. If you got a new mattress recently did you have to air it out? For how long?

We got a new mattress last year and I don't remember a distinct smell.

Yes, we aired it out for a week before covering it with the sheets.

We got one last year and it was awful!!!! I sprayed Febreze and ran the fan but it didn't help much. I ended up putting a mattress cover on it and the sheets over and it wasn't too bad.

Some mattresses (and other furniture) are sold with flame retardants that have been shown to be harmful. Flame retardants have been linked to cancer, reduced IQ, developmental delays, obesity, and reproductive issues. It's a big problem and many states are working on legislation to prevent it. I strongly recommend that anybody considering purchasing a new mattress should look into green/eco-friendly mattresses, though unfortunately they are more expensive.

I was less informed about this the last time we bought a mattress, and the off-gassing affected my husband so strongly that he had to sleep in the guest bedroom for a week. It was awful.

You should let your new mattress off gas for at least a week before anyone sleeps on it. It's best to do it in a garage or something so it's not in your house, if possible.
