My DH isn't sure he wants to (the nurse on our hospital tour made it sound unpleasant).

Yes. He said he wasn't super for or against it but in the heat of the moment they asked and he did it. He said it felt like calamari and was much harder to cut then he thought it would be! He said he'll do it for #2 also.

Nope, he had no interest at all!
My mom and my ILs were both in the delivery room with us. My mom cut the cord, and my FIL trimmed it down (when E was in the warmer tray thing).

He did. Your DH could always just wait and see how he feels after the baby is born, watching the birth might sway his mind one way or the other.

Nope. He almost passed out when they asked and had to have two nurses help him sit down!
pomelo / 5820 posts
Yep! Before I went into labor he said he wasn't sure if he wanted to do it... But he also said he wasn't sure if he was going to look down there at all, haha. But, he not only watched the entire birth, he cut the cord, too. He actually had trouble cutting all the way through at first! He snipped at it, and the nurse was like uhhh you're not done, haha.

Nope, they didn't ask him the first time and he declined the second time!

@MrsH: what? (Directed at said nurse.) That is the weirdest ...that she would make it sound unpleasant. It is one of DH's best memories honestly.
honeydew / 7667 posts
@Greentea: yeah she basically said it would take a couple of cuts and described its texture, etc.

I had a c-section, so the doctor cut it, but left more than usual, so that DH could "trim" it.

@rahlyrah: my DH almost passed out too! But he got back up to cut the cord which is funny to me because before LO was born he insisted that he didn't want to do it!

He was unsure , but in the end he didn't have to make the choice because the OB cut it to get her checked ASAP by the paediatrician. I don't know what he will do for future LOs

@lilteacherbee: same!
The plan was for dh to cut it but since I ended up with a cs, he only "trimmed" it.

Nope, DS had a collapsed lung and was whisked away immediately after he was out.
pear / 1699 posts
No - not sure if they even asked though since DS went straight to the NICU station in the room because he was in distress.
nectarine / 2079 posts
Yes. He had zero intention of doing it (he is not good with blood), but in the moment when the doctor handed him the scissors he was really happy about getting to do it.

Yes, my midwife told him it would be hard to cut through but he said it wasn't at all!

My dad cut mine and thought it was cool, but he also liked watching operations on TV lol.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
I have a feeling I'm going to have to cut it myself. DH is kind of a weinie.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Nope! The offered him the chance to, but he wasn't interested. Plus I think he was still queasy from my episiotomy!
pomegranate / 3393 posts
Yes, and he's the only one of us that took a glance at the placenta too!
nectarine / 2994 posts
Yes he did. All throughout my pregnancy he kept reminding me he wanted to cut it, so we made sure the midwife knew and it was in our birth plan. My midwife made sure the doctors/nurses knew dh was to cut it.
nectarine / 2667 posts
He would have, but the OB cut it right away to get our son checked out. My husband wasn't sad that he missed it - maybe next time.
GOLD / coconut / 8266 posts
Nope, he wanted to but LO had to be checked by a NICU team right away so the doctor did it.
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
No, but my daughter had to be taken by the pediatric team immediately. I think he handed her to me once she was stable, but I can't remember, it was all a blur.

He didn't think he's want to but in the moment he did. I'm glad he did!

Yes!...he was totally awe struck when the dr called him over. He proceeded to trip over all of my IV lines and take down the metal tower thing.
And then he panicked even more. Haha.

Yes and No...I had a C-section and lo was 5 weeks early, so the dr. cut the cord initially, but once they did his APGAR and he was doing very well they let him trim it the rest of the way.

DH had no desire to do it he said when I asked him during pregnancy. I even started a thread about it. But when the time came, the doctor said ok Dad and handed him the scissors (or whatever it was). I asked him if he felt like he had too and he said no, that he changed his mind and he wanted too.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
He originally didn't really have the desire to but I told him while I was pregnant that I thought it would be neat if he did and then in the moment he was excited and really wanted to!
grapefruit / 4712 posts
Dh didn't want to the whole time I was pregnant with N but in the end he did. He was pretty proud of himself tho.
nectarine / 2466 posts
Yup. Dh's loves that kind of stuff. He would have pulled the baby out if he was allowed haha.
eggplant / 11716 posts
My DH also didn't want to....but did! Seems to be a common theme. Now he acts like it was cool.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
He didn't want to beforehand (he's very squeamish!), but when the time came he was totally into it. The emotions took over and he was excited to have a part in it.
