It didn't with DS1 and my OB broke it before pushing time.
DS2 my water broke at 530am after having my membranes swept the day before! It was like a small water balloon popped! Not a big gush of anything.

Yep. It broke on it's own both times while I was laboring at the hospital.

Nope, they broke mine in the hospital. I was having a few contractions, not bad or anything. Then I wanted to start getting things going, so my midwife broke my water at 12, and by 12:15 i was begging for the epi!!! I can't believe how quickly my contractions escalated!

Not sure how to vote because do you mean before labor started/to start labor? ETA - reread the title so I get it now! Yes it broke on it's own, but well into labor.
Mine brought while I was in labor at the hospital, I think I was around 5 cm at the time.

nope. The doctor broke mine while I was laboring at the hospital to try and speed things up. No liquid came out because DS was already so low that he was acting like a drain plug, so she thought maybe it had already burst even though I hadn't been leaking any fluid. When he was finally born, he was followed by a waterfall!

for my first, yes, it started with a small gush, followed by bigger gushes. prior to having kids, i thought it'd be like the tv/movies, where your water would break, and you'd somehow just waltz into the L&D looking good. but for me, i had to waddle, with a big towel around me, big pads, and i still leaked through. ! but anywho, we made it, altho not glamourously. For my second the midwife broke my water so nothing interesting.

Yup, it broke early at 28 weeks (PPROM). Luckily, it was a small leak and I kept both babies in for 6 weeks until I was induced at 34 weeks. For the birth, I did have a failed induction and needed a c-section.

Yes, both times. I also didn't have any contractions before my water broke.

They broke it for my first
For my second, it broke literally seconds before DD came out. Like, the dr ran in the room to deliver her and it popped ALL OVER her. She wasn't dressed in her gown or anything and was drenched from head to toe. Poor Doctor, she earned her money that day haha.

Broke about 2 minutes before she arrived. It was a big fountaining gush that soaked everyone down at that end!

No, they broke it at the hospital when I was at 9cm.

The first time it broke on its own when I was changing into my hospital gown. My second was an induction and they broke it after four hours of pitocin not doing much.

Yup, I was sleeping and I felt a pop in my abdomen that woke me up. First sign of labor for me too.

Broke on its own well into labor at the hospital both times. With my first I was laboring in the bed when it broke with a big gush then smaller gushes when every contraction. With my second it broke while I was pushing- I may have gotten all the nurses/ midwives! Both times there was no mistaking it at all.

@mrsjyw: Yes, once I was already at the hospital and in the bed in active labor. It was CRAZY! It was so sudden and SO MUCH fluid. I screamed for the nurse hahaha.

Yes, mine broke both times on its own about a month before my due date. Not a crazy gush either time, but little gushes.

I had a high leak with my fort. Felt a little pop, had a tiny bit of fluid then nothing. Doc had no idea and realized while pushing so he just broke my water while I was pushing.

I was induced. My doc came in at some point to try and break my waters, but there wasn't any movie style gush at that point.
Later on, I sat up to have my epidural placed, and I felt like I was gushing buckets and buckets, especially when I was contracting, so maybe my water was breaking then?

The nurse broke my water in the hospital before I got into the tub. Baby was born a couple of hours later.

Yes it broke right before pushing both times. With my second it was two pushes after the water broke that LO was in my arms.

I didn't vote because I went to the hospital to be induced at 41+4 and when I was changing and peeing when we first got there, there was some strange stuff in the toilet(tmi sorry). I didn't say anything to the nurse(I should have but I wasnt sure if it had already been in the toilet before I used the bathroom) at that time but when my water did break for real, it looked the same as what I saw in the toilet. Possibly meconium or just some mucous. So I think it was leaking before receiving pitocin but I couldn't say for sure.

No, my doctor broke it when I was in early labor, then broke it again right before DD was born!

My water broke the night before I was supposed to be induced. It was a huge gush, I couldn't believe how much it was! Contractions didn't start for a couple of hours after.
honeydew / 7463 posts
I said yes because the doc didn't do it. But I was induced with pitocin at 37 weeks, so it's not like it hAppened totally on its own.
clementine / 756 posts
Nope. I was 10 cm and pushing and it still hadn't broken, so they broke it for me. Small amount of fluid came out, but my son was blocking the rest, so it all came gushing out after him.
pomelo / 5093 posts
Nope. With my second daughter, it never broke, and she was born en caul. It hurt.
honeydew / 7622 posts
Kind of? It broke during my induction and I was on pit, but it was not manually broken.
nectarine / 2466 posts
The first time it broke on its own ( my first sign of impending labour. )
The second time they broke it about an hour after I got to the hospital. Baby was born 10 mins later!

Broke with my first right before transition and with my second it broke a few hours before I felt any contractions.
pomegranate / 3533 posts
Had a "high leak" so technically broke on their own. Afterwards still had artificial rupture of membranes though.
pomegranate / 3764 posts
Nope, never burst. They had to pop mine at about 6-7cm when labour slowed down. Weirdest feeling!
