I get so paranoid that I'll be out in the middle of running errands and SPLOOOSH! My water will break right then and there.
Has this happened to you?

Me too! My OB had to break mine both times though.

That would be so crazy. Makes me think of sex & the city.
Mine was broken by my OB during my induction. Yuck.

Mine broke when I was out to dinner at a Mexican restaurant with my in-laws. My husband and I left right away, but I guess the restaurant was really nice about it and told them that we should come back with the baby and that they were going to tell people their hot salsa puts people in labor.

in the waiting room with charlie, and the doctor broke mine with olive.

No thank goodness, but a teacher I worked with this year had her water break in class in front of the kids!!

Yes, it broke on it's own, no- I was at home. I was sitting on the couch, reached down to pick up a pen I had dropped, and POP! My husband said I jumped up and ran to the bathroom he thought I had to throw up since I moved so fast. I only soaked my pants though, luckily not the couch!

I was so scared that it would!
It popped on its own while I was waiting to be induced, labor started fast and furious about 20 minutes later. No need for pitocin! lol

No, I had very good timing - just as the doctor was telling me to go home and come back in the morning because she didn't think I was going to progress from early to active labor anytime soon (and I wanted to kill her because I was in a lot of pain already), my water broke. It was literally in the middle of her sentence...yeah, they admitted me!

@matador84: that would've been my worst nightmare!
My water was broken by the doctor during my induction.

No, it happened at home thank god! We had been thinking about going out to supper, I am SO glad we didn't...

I was afraid of this too, but my OB had to break both of mine!

Yes, we were at a nice restaurant when mine broke. I felt the pop right after we ordered our entrees. It didn't gush until I went to the bathroom to check on what that pop was (wanted to make sure it wasn't just gas) ... Even though I had timeable contractions for an hour before that. Walking back to the car sucked... I leaked a bunch with each step.

I was so afraid of that! But luckily mine broke at home! Even luckily I had justly gotten off the couch.

I was afraid of that too. I kept extra yoga pants and overnight pads with me just in case but alas - they broke it in the hospital when I was 8cm!

Nope mine did it at home while I was loading the dishes. And it wasn't a big Gush. In fact I thought it was bladder leakage. I experienced leakage for months. It didn't gush until we got out of the car and started walking through the hospital. By that point I didn't care what anyone else thought

I had a scheduled c-section, so no popping for me, but one of my closest friends is a teacher and hers broke both time at school. Luckily once was after hours, and the other was during a parent-teacher conference. So not as bad as in front of her 6th graders.

@lucy123: OMG! Thank goodness the restaurant was nice about it.
Mine broke on its own at the hospital. It gushed out like a waterfall as DH and I attempted to walk around the halls to get things going. I hustled back into my bathroom and DH cleaned up my mess.

It broke in the hospital in bed during a contraction, with a big gush.
I had been carrying around a monster pad with for weeks just in case though!

No, and weirdly I wasn't worried about it. Well once, at my niece's birthday party 3 days before I went into labor, but mostly because there were like 30 7 year olds there and I didn't want to have to explain...
Anyway, they broke my waters when I was 9cm.

With my first 2 they broke it while I was in labor, with my last one the dr. was on her way to break it just after the epi was placed (anesthesiologist was still in the room) it broke on it's own. I was so surprised, I was laughing through the mega contractions that followed. I was convinced my water would never break on it's own..

This is one of my worries at the moment. I'm 39+4. I still like getting out and about each day, but once I am I feel the need to get home quickly in case it happens. Fingers crossed it'll go once I'm in established labour in the hospital.

For DS, my water was nice and popped when I sat on the toilet. With S it was broken in the hospital.

@beachbee: same here. Woke up in the middle of the night, and woosh!

We don't know when mine broke. The baby was so low and engaged it never came out until after I delivered her! When I was a ten my doc went to break it only to discover it was already broken.
Is it weird that I would have rathered it broke out in public than all over my bed? I wouldn't have wanted to have to clean it up!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Nope! Mine had to be broken at the hospital, but I was totally paranoid of a public water gushing!
honeydew / 7091 posts
No, mine broke as I was getting out of bed one morning.
It seems like I'm the only one that *wanted* it to break in public?! I totally wanted a big dramatic water break!

With my first, my water broke at work. It wasn't a big deal and most of my co-workers didn't even know I was in labor until we sent out an email that night announcing our daughter's birth.

No, I was home doing laundry. Bent over to pick some stuff off the floor and felt a small trickle. Kind of thought I'd peed at first so I got to the bathroom before it really started running.
I kept a garbage bag in my glove box in the later weeks just in case I had to be driven to the hospital while leaking. I changed my clothes before we left, but by the time we got there had soaked through my pants and was leaking on the floor of admitting pretty badly.
I also was far more worried about it breaking on something super hard to clean like my couch/bed/car seats than in public. At least at the grocery store they'd just mop it up off linoleum.

Mine broke as I walked out of childbirth class. LO was a month early so I was completely not ready for it. We ran home from the doctors office to grab some stuff from home. I was running around my house in a soaked maxi dress with a bath towel between my legs throwing random items in my bag. The highlight would have to be my flip flops squishing as we walked down the hospital hallway.

Mine broke while I was in labor at the hospital (on the toilet no less, so not much mess)!
