Any advice? My one year old is obsessed with the outlet where her lamp and sound machine are plugged in. She thinks it's hilarious to unplug them. I have tried swatting at her hand (she laughs), speaking sharply (she pauses and then starts laughing) and moving/redirecting her (she crawls right over to the same spot). I'm at a loss... and I didn't think I would have to deal with this kind of thing this soon! And so it begins!

Unfortunately at this age redirection is the only real option. If you have to, go in another room and shut the door to her room so she can't get in there. At our one year appointment my doctor told me it's not even worth discussion "discipline" until 18 months because they just don't get it.

Just keep redirecting, and be consistent. If you let her play with it once, you undo all of the previous "no"s. We are getting to that point too...sigh. Try to provide plenty of opportunities for play in a safe place where you don't have to say no, so that when you do it means something!
That's really all you can do at that age. They learn limits by testing them. Unfortunately, it takes lots of testing before they understand.

I agree...redirecting is the only thing that may work at this age. If it's possible, have it out of site by putting something in front of it? Out of sight out of mind?

i'm also redirecting. i have no idea what i'm actually supposed to do.. i can't believe we have to think about this already! LO's current favorite hobby is to get onto the dishwasher door and stand up in it (gave me a heart attack!). i just moved her and now i close the door as fast as i can. i'm starting to read some books on discipline. i'm a total pushover tho! ack.

I've been so anxious for L to start crawling and being more mobile...this post is a reminder for me to also be somewhat grateful that he hasn't figured it out yet! Haha.

We had the same problem. The only way we solved it is by not using the outlet. It's now blocked by those child-proof plastic things. We use a different outlet that's under her crib an use an extension cord.

Baby proofing and redirecting here too. The only other sort of discipline of sorts that I do is "I don't like that" or "that's not for babies." But I never spend any additional time scolding or whatever.

I'm redirecting, it isn't working but we are tyring. She's obsessed with pulling the phone chargers out of the wall in our bedroom, I tell her no and move her, never works. But we keep trying (And you know trying to convince DH to charge his phone somewhre where she can't reach
)

We try to spend most of our time in "safe" play spaces where he's allowed to touch most stuff. I have given him extra cords to old phone chargers and unplugged surge protectors (with all the outlet ports) to let him get out his curiosity in a non-lethal way. It seems to have helped - he generally leaves the cords/wall outlets alone. If he goes to one I say, "that's not for playing, lets get your cords" and redirect him that way.

Yep we've just blocked off any "active" outlets. LO will still try to push our nightstands out of the way if he has the opportunity. We do a lot of "that's not for babies" and redirecting. I know it seems like they "know" they're not supposed to be doing something but I think it's actually that they "know" action X will get reaction Y and that's what they're after.

Glad you posted this question. We are getting to this point really quickly too! Redirection it is. About a hundred times a day. These LOs - they're really focused on what they want aren't they? K is obsessed with all power strips and cords. No matter how much redirection or hiding, she seems to remember where they are. And she laughs at my sharp or lower tones too.
That's really all you can do at that age. They learn limits by testing them. Unfortunately, it takes lots of testing before they understand.
