I really, really want to try cloth diapering, but hubs is not on board, and it seems no amount of convincing will get him there. I realize that I am going to be the changer 90% of the time, at least in the first several months when I am out on maternity leave, but we've got to find something that is going to work for us.
Although I would say I care about the environment as much or more as the next guy, I have to tell you my reasons for wanting to cloth diaper have *absolutely nothing* to do with the health of the general environment or creating less waste--it is all about reducing my child's exposure to harmful chemicals. I am far more concerned about my kid sitting on top of a pile of chemical goo, breathing in chlorine residue, or sweating in un-breathable plastic than I am about the time it takes for a disposable diaper to decompose or the volume of waste created by disposables. This is about the health of my (as yet unborn) child.
So, environmental impacts aside, I'm looking for advice on whether all disposables are truly harmful, whether SAP is really inert (as gdiapers and seventh generation and other "green" brands claim it is), whether there are disposable options that do not contain SAP (so far I haven't found any), if so whether those work, and what has worked for moms that are concerned about their babies' health but for whatever reason cloth diapering isn't an option.
Thanks!
