@Arden: yes! My friend said in Guatemala, you had to put the poopy toilet paper in a can because of the plumbing and she said it just smelled SO BAD in the summer. Now that seems really unappealing to me.

@blackbird: Well in most of the places I lived people used a bidet to clean and tp just to dry off, so it didn't smell. I can see using cloth wipes to dry off - it wouldn't smell or be gross to launder so if it made a significant impact on the environment I'd be willing to do that.

@Arden: Oh yeah no, my friend was like...living in a thatch floored hut that summer. There were no bidets, just trash cans for used TP.
I would probably just keep a towel near the toilet like I do near the shower and it would just be my butt towel. Have it embroidered to say "butt" so nobody uses it on their face

@blackbird: Haha, yeah.
I did live in one place without running water and we just always took the trash out daily so it didn't get too bad. But yeah, I wouldn't get rid of TP if I didn't have running water. No way.

@Chastenet: My issue wouldn't be with the proximity of my hand to my poopy butt, it would be with having to store cloths with poop on them somewhere until we could do a load of laundry.
We live in an apartment building and have access to the shared washing machine 2 days per week.
My husband seriously poops 3 or 4 times a day. And it's messy. There is no way I would be storing that many dirty cloths somewhere until we could do the wash! I can not even imagine the smell. Yuck.
Also, I highly doubt our neighbor upstairs would appreciate us putting cloths with our poop on them into the shared machine.
I guess theoretically I wouldn't have an issue with a bidet plus cloths for drying since the cloths wouldn't have skidmarks on them...

@blackbird: I use the wet wipes for the same reason. Must be SUPER clean when you have hemorrhoids . And when we were on our honeymoon in St. Lucia we took a whole tour of the island and one of the public bathrooms in this tiny village said not to flush the TP and all the girls on the tour were horrified. It smelled pretty bad.

I use cloth menstrual pads now but I don't know if I could go that far to replace my toilet paper.
I would consider a bidet. I've used one when I was in France.
I would have to see how the bidet works and how clean I feel before I could get rid of toilet paper.
ETA: Hmm, interesting bidet add-on attachment. Not bad for $36.
The other question is... if you use this product, will it spray water all over your bathroom? I would hope not.
