Has anyone done the diy applique onesies you see all over pinterest? I got some stuff to make them, I was just wondering if the applique starts to come off after a few washes. I was thinking about sewing over it, but then someone told me that can gum up your sewing needle.

I haven't made any, but I would wash it inside out and lay out to dry and I doubt you'd have trouble--I do this w/stuff you're not supposed to machine wash all the time.

Yup! I recommend sewing them. I'm not sure why it would harm your needle- just let the iron-on dry and cool down first.
Or you could hand stitch them.

@Mrs. Pen: Yeah, definitely going to have to sew around them - parts are already peeling up! They look cute though. Now I'm just wasting time online to come up with other silhouette ideas.

I made some for my cousin when she had a baby last spring and I sewed around them. It just didn't seem like the iron-on stuff would stay by themselves. They turned out really cute, especially since I used a contrasting color for the thread. It didn't gum up my needle at at all. Here they are:
ETA: Ha, guess you can't really see the contrasting stitches, but they are there!

I would definitely sew over it; the applique onesies we were gifted began to come up after a few washes.

I do all of my appliques with my embroidery machine, but before that, I would use heat n' bond and then do a zig zag stitch around them. the heat n' bond keeps the fabric from unraveling, too.

@Mrsbells: I used a machine with a straight stitch. I think I set it 3 or 3.5. If I did out again though I would do a zig zag stitch. -
Finished! I think the yellow dragon is my favorite. The cotton ones I machine stitched around the edges. I did a pretty terrible job of it, but you couldn't tell from a galloping horse. The felt ones I hand did with embroidery thread.
