I haven't had a lot of luck doing that. It's really hard for me to get the fabric smoothed out before the hot glue dries, plus it sometimes shows through the fabric.

I've done it. And I used hot glue and a thicker fabric than quilting fabric. Some things I learned was that it takes longer than you think it will. And the way she does it in the Monkey Business blog (basically drawing a "plus" on the fabric), uses a ton of fabric. I ended up cutting one long strip and two smaller squares to cover the box.

The way I did it was to cover the ends (with the squares of fabric) first by securing a small flap of fabric onto the bottom and then slowly gluing the fabric onto the inside lip of the box, very slowly pulling it neat, and gluing small flaps onto the sides so things are neat. The hot glue can show through the fabric so you can definitely try fabric spray glue (but I have found that when I use that I get glue everywhere). I basically just used the hot glue and glued it in areas that wouldn't show.

After you've covered the ends, what I do is take one long strip of fabric and cover the bottom and the front and back, making sure to secure the bottom before securing each end. Hopefully this makes sense.

Have a ruler, pencil, and iron nearby and ready to go.

Be patient because it's easy but if you want it to look nice you need to go slowly. And if you want your boxes to be inside little cubbies, you really only need one end to look perfect. I also ended up making little basket liners out of muslin for some of my boxes and the liners really make things look finished. People are always surprised that these boxes are cardboard and several people have asked me where I bought them.

I actually did two large fabric boxes and it used so much fabric I ended up switching to contact paper and while it's not as nice looking, it's cheaper and quicker.

Also keep in mind that these boxes are just cardboard, so they're not super durable and they can be flimsy. But i've used mine for storage for about 8 months now and they've all held up.

I did mine while I was pregnant and I really liked it and became box-making-crazy-nesting-lady. I made boxes for holding diapers, toys, pumping supplies, blankets, small boxes for my bathroom to hold toiletries, medicines, towels, hand towels, razors, almost everything. Once you get started you never look at a box the same!

@Raindrop: Agreed! Nice fabric is expensive. You would be better off just buying a premade fabric box. It will be more sturdy than a diaper box and probably cost you less than buying all of the nice fabric to DIY it.
