I'm clueless! I currently only have 2 pairs bc I thought they were just for fun. My husband seems horrified that we wouldn't put shoes on her to leave the house!

LO is almost 8 months old an I can count on one hand the number of times she's worn shoes. I think until they can walk you are fine with just socks as long as you don't live in a super cold climate.

We started doing shoes when LO started pulling up consistantly. Its been about a month, so when she was 7.5 months. Before that, we did the Trumpette socks.

LO has wore shoes maybe once and she is 5.5 months old. Once she starts walking we will put shoes on her to go out. I don't think they are necessary for really little babies.

Babies feet grow so fast, you wouldn't be able to put shoes on them more than once or twice. It's not really necessary until they can walk all the time. Just some socks would be fine.
Tell your dh to look at other babies when he's out and about to see how many are actually wearing shoes...probably most won't be!

We are lucky enough to have a baby girl and just buy those socks that look like ballet slippers (: idk what little boys do
Aside from that, we put shoes on her sometimes, but just for fun. Not because babies need shoes, but because we were gifted five pairs so we figure it doesn't hurt to throw them on every so often...she's almost 8 weeks old (:

I put socks on my LO, he's 8.5 weeks old because it's winter and he is always putting his feet in his mouth and soaking his socks.

We were shoes for pictures and then she kicks them off. Usually we just make sure she has cute socks on (Trumpette's are our go to.) I'll start putting her in shoes when she walks

LO didn't wear shoes until he walked. In winter when LO was a baby I just put on thick socks. My feeling is that shoes are generally constrictive and probably not great for growing feet. I still try to let LO go shoeless whenever possible--shoes are mainly for outside or places where there might be something that would be unpleasant to step on.

I wish I had at least put socks on my little guy more often. Now at 13 months, he hates everything on his feet. We are just getting to the point of actually needing shoes, they were just decorative before.

Phewf! Thanks everyone! Sounds like I don't need to worry about shoes for a while we have tons of socks!

I dont but lots of shoes on her, but my sister does with her kids. It depends on the parent i guess. Until they start standing i dont see it as necessary

I haven't purchased one pair, we received about 20 pairs as gifts, and she's worn two pairs of them so far.....maybe 5 times? She is 4 months, and we assume this will change with more time, but for now, zero practicality to them, all for cute!

I think LO has worn shoes maybe twice and she's a little under 7 months old. She kicks/pulls shoes off when we put them on her. We figure when she's more mobile and actually walking or at least cruising, we'll put shoes on her more.

We only have 2 pairs but I try to put shoes on her when we leave the house these days, only to keep her feet warm. In the summer and fall I took her out in socks. If she's in her stroller with the bunting, I'll leave the shoes at home.

We put shoes on him starting around six months. They helped keep his socks on and he had just started crawling and pulling himself up. He is 10 months now and really only wears them when we are going out.

LO is 8.5 months and has never worn shoes, yet! It is not *too* terribly cold in vancouver in the winter so socks do fine. If we were back east I would probably get him fuzzy shoes/slippers to wear when we go out to keep his toes warm

We started putting shoes on LO when he was 6-ish months and the weather was cooler. Socks don't stay on and I hated coming home to realize we had lost a sock somewhere along our travels.

@Beebug: yay! Someone that can relate! We were gifted something like 16 pairs of shoes at our showers! Plus my sister has been buying some here and there since the beginning and I admit to buying a couple of cute ones just for pics. But really it's ridiculous how many baby shoes we got (thankfully I was able to return some!).
I think they'll only get worn for cute pics or parties. I can't imagine they're easy to put on infants?

@shopaholic: I use the robeez because they stay on, great gift! And then a pair of running shoes that are just toooo cute. The rest I wasn't able to return and sit all cutely placed in a cubby in her open shelf dresser! Totally cute, but not when there's that many, lol. Glad I'm not the only one, but I guess all the people that gifted them bought 1-2 pairs and it added up, lol.

My 9 month old has never worn shoes. I will only put her in shoes when she is walking out doors
apricot / 307 posts
My LO is 9 months and he's been wearing robeez since the weather started to get cold. The only reason that he wears them is because he ALWAYS pulls his socks off and the only way we can keep his little toes warm is to put on robeez. That way he can't pull them off.
pomelo / 5093 posts
Nope! My girl wore socks or footed sleepers all her first winter - born in September. She didn't consistently wear shoes until this winter, first because it was cold and she was a bit old for just socks, and now because she walks.
bananas / 9973 posts
@Beebug: Oh I would have loved getting some Robeez! No, of the 16, I think 1 pair were big enough I think she might be able to wear when she is starting to stand or walk. The rest were all 0-3 or 0-6 months! There were even little low-cut slip-ons! I mean, what baby is going to be able to keep slip-ons on? lol!

babies shouldn't wear shoes unless they are walking/moving around on their feet. pre-walking shoes inhibit movement in growing feet- barefoot is best.
GOLD / papaya / 10206 posts
The only times she has worn shoes to date is either because they were cute and went with her outfit (special events/pictures) or her winter booties to keep her toes warm. I bout her a pair of Stride Rites today for daycare since she will be walking soon and will need outside shoes.

Barefoot/socks is best at home and indoors, but when you go out, booties or soft soled leather (like robeez) can really help keep those toesies from getting cold this time of year. Even after walking and for quite a few months after (some say, up to 2 yrs old), it's recommended to do soft soled shoes. Hard soled shoes affect balance and stability, seems silly to hinder your LO just for fashion? There are definitely some super cute options for soft soles these days.

DS didn't wear shoes until he started walking. I didn't see the need in them before then. We were gifted a few pairs but never even tried them on.
@lemondrop: My LO didn't like having shoes on at first either. We had to "practice" wearing them at home. I would put them on him during the day when we didn't have anywhere to be. I started off with short periods of time and worked up. Now he loves putting them on.

C is a fashionista and wore crib shoes from the very beginning! lol. She's always had a pair of black Mary Janes and a pair of pink Converse to wear. We're not going to buy her "real" shoes until she starts walking though.
coconut / 8475 posts
We have soooo many cute pairs (puma,converse,crocs,uugs...) but haven't worn them yet because I bought them in 6m+ because I knew any time before that would be too young.
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
LO didn't wear shoes until she started walking. We're in Florida so it's hot, and personally I don't like wearing shoes so I thought it would be uncomfy for her too.
honeydew / 7303 posts
My LO won't keep them on. She will barely wear socks and loves pulling them off. I've started tucking her pants into her socks. Stylin!
