I'm only 30 weeks with my first, but have been wondering as I get closer, when do they start checking your cervix and is it painful?

I guess mine didn't hurt because I had a male OB. Maybe he had long skinny fingers? I think for many they are intensely uncomfortable.

Yes. And they can introduce infection especially if your water has broken. I asked for minimal checks during my labor. My doc did check once in the office when I was overdue, too.

omg yes.
but apparently if you're dilated and effaced a bit, and baby is low, it doesn't hurt as much. When I was checked in the hospital when I was induced it didn't hurt like it did in the doctor's office.

It was uncomfortable for sure, but I wouldn't say painful. I don't think many doctors do them unless you ask for it. My doctor checked mine at 36 and 40 weeks, but only because I was curious.

I didn't find them uncomfortable/painful at all, actually. But then again, I didn't have any with number one until I was well into labor and with number two I had already obviously delivered a baby so maybe that made a difference.

It was uncomfortable but not awful. My OB only did one in the office I think. I wasn't showing any signs of labor and she didn't want to put me through anything unnecessary.

In didn't think they were that painful--kind of like a Pap smear. Cranky but not painful.

Depends on who does them, IMO. The midwife that did mine a few weeks ago made me say "ouch!" And crawl backwards up the table - and I have a high pain tolerance.
The OB that did mine this week was very gentle and it wasn't bad at all.

I found that it depend on what ob checked me. With one it was just a bit uncomfortable, with another it didn't at all, and with the last guy it hurt like hell.

My doctor and his PA were the best. Painless.
Every single nurse I ever had in the hospital used scissors or something. It was traumatizing.

I don't remember ever hurting actually. I would say it is uncomfortable and weird and something that I do not look forward to, but I do not remember pain. Maybe I've been extremely uncomfortable anyway toward the end of my pregnancy nothing bothers me anymore lol.

I thought they were uncomfortable. But not like crazy painful.

The only cervical check that I had was while I was in hospital in labour. My OB didn't do any cervical checks at any of my appointments prior to labour, he just did an ultrasound.

Mine did them weekly starting at 36 weeks. And they definitely were uncomfortable.

Thanks, everyone. Based on the majority, it's something I'm definitely not looking forward to!

Eh, didn't hurt but wasn't comfortable. I second the male OB, he was gentle. The female nurses at the hospital hurt much worse!

Depends on who does it. My cervix likes to hang out far from reach ( like up near my armpits ha ha!) so mine are always an adventure.

I wouldn't say painful, more uncomfortable. I didn't have one until I was in labor though.

Uncomfortable for sure. You also bleed a bit after it too. I bled a bit and required a pad/icing. Even with them, I still didn't go into labor until 39+ weeks.

Yeah, I was kinda traumatized after all the checks. But then my cervix was super high and I never really dilated. I've decided never again though. If I get pregnant again in refusing all checks and likely opting for a scheduled c-section. If I some how do go into labor I don't want to be checked until I'm well into active labor.

I didn't find at all!
My dr doesn't usually do them unless you are overdue or you request one. I started asking around 37 weeks because I was curious!

The answers are so surprising to me! Mine didn't hurt at all. No bleeding, no trauma. I had 3 different docs do checks, and none of them hurt. I wanted to be checked... I needed to know my progress!

@ShootingStar: I was checked during active labor. I had my bloody show as a result of it. Without it, we wouldn't have known that I was 4 cm by that point and ready to be admitted to the hospital.

I had one in the doctors office and it wasn't bad. Then one I had when I was in labor was hell. And it felt like he was checking things for forever.

Yes but it definitely depends on who does them. I had one nurse in L&D who was awesome at checking and it barely hurt.
