Wow, I'm surprised by some of these answers! It was uncomfortable for me but not painful, no bleeding or lasting discomfort. I was only checked at my last appt before my EDD and then twice during active labor.

Shocked people think they hurt. Mine didn't at all.

Ugh, I remember them as the worst parts of my unmedicated labor. I didn't have any during pregnancy.

I started getting checked at 36 weeks and they were very uncomfortable

When I did it at my OB appt it was fine but once I was at the hospital they hurt!

I only had checks once in active labour but my midwife and the head OB were both pretty gentle however the consulting OB who checked me on arrival at the hospital was in a hurry and pretty rough!

I'm pretty sure you can refuse them because they're kind of pointless in determining when you go into labor... at least with a first pregnancy they are. My doc didn't make me do them, so I only had them in the hospital and they didn't hurt at all.

I found them slightly uncomfortable but definitely not painful. The midwives were surprisingly rough when checking dilation!

I only had them after being induced at 37 weeks and it hurt. I didn't have any before since I wasn't showing any signs of labor. For me, they only stopped hurting with the epidural

I found it more uncomfortable than anything else. I don't remember them being truly painful. Definitely uncomfortable, with varying levels of discomfort depending on who was checking.

Mine didn't hurt - no bleeding or anything. A couple of times I felt nothing. Once, I felt pressure. I also was never really dilated or effaced.

I'm not saying that I looked forward to them but I'm also shocked by how many people say they hurt.

I'm also surprised at how many found them painful. I only had a few since I had a breech baby and it wasn't necessary since I was going to end up with a c-section, but they did a few leading up to scheduling it to be sure he hadn't turned. I wasn't any worse than the check during an annual exam.

I don't' remember them hurting? Comparable to a pap smear, not pleasant but not painful.

When my (male) OB did them, didn't hurt at all. I wouldn't even say they were uncomfortable. the only one that was painful was done by a midwife in the hospital during my induction. that hurt! like I wanted to run away(and was definitely backing away while in the bed).

The ones my OB did in her office before labor did not hurt at all, but the ones in labor (by a different female OB) hurt a lot.
