At a restaurant this evening, one of the waitresses asked me who my baby belonged to. She said "She is so cute! How old? She isn't yours...whose is she?"
I was kind of taken aback and told her she was mine. She quickly came back with "Oh, I just thought you looked too skinny to have a baby so young."
Nice recovery, lady!

Not in so many words but I've been asked what country her parents are from. When I answer her dad is American and I'm also from the US but Japanese, they look a little surprised.

Only once has someone asked me, "They're yours, right?" I think she thought I was a nanny since there are a lot in my neighborhood.

I had this happen once when DS was a couple of months old. This old lady came up to me and goes "oh, who's baby?" But her tone was just snotty! I was so mad over it!

Nope. My LO looks pretty much just like me, and I'm not really old or young when it comes to having kids so it's assumed she's mine.

I'm interested to see if I get this. When my husband was a baby he looked very Asian (despite having no Asian heritage that we are aware of). And his dad was exactly the same. So if our baby turns out to look Asian too people will likely be confused by it.

This hasn't and wont happen to me because husband and I are both Asian, but my sister in law gets asked that a lot. She is blonde ans green eyed and my nephew and nieces really look full Asian, even more so when they were babies. People would ask her where her kids were from and she would say "my stomach!"

I don't think anyone has asked that of me, even though I am young - but I'm not skinny lol. I have had both my son and my half-Peruvian nephew while out and about I do wonder what people think... Adoption is so commonplace now that I don't even wonder when I see mixed families 
I know several as well.
I was 15 when my sister was born, and once I could drive I took her everywhere with me!! People always thought she was my daughter, but that I was a teenage mom lol it cracked me up all the time.

At his baptism someone at the church said "Are you the Godmother?" and I said, no, I'm the mother. I can see why they may have asked in that situation. We only had a Godfather and no Godmother for him.
I've also had the opposite problem:
When I was a nanny of 3 (for 3 summers in a row), people assumed they were my kids all the time (especially the first year when the littlest was 10 months). I always had to say "I'm just the babysitter", and a couple times I just let them give me the 'they are so precious and soak up every ounce before they grow so fast' without saying 'they aren't mine'.

@Coco Bee: ha, that happened to my Mom when her sister was born, except she hated having to take her out because she hated people thinking she was hers.

@cvbee: really? Aw I loved it Although now my sister (she's 7) tells anyone, whenever I take her out now, that I'm her sister. Before anyone even has the chance to ask! It's so cute.

I fully expect to get this. I am 24 (recently!) and DH is 30. When we're together I look older but when I'm alone people assume I'm younger. When I buy my baby's clothing they say "...going to a shower?" & I have to point to my not so obvious belly and say "nope!" they always give me a "jeez how old are you" look.

@cocobee my brother and I are 13 years apart and people always thought I was his mom too! he would get so mad about it, and to this day tells me that I think I'm his mom not his sister it's definitely a different sibling relationship with so many years between us! he is 16 now, and I do want to mother him... he's trouble.
