My MIL and BIL love feeding LO and they told me I was too uptight about food. I let them feed LO a little bit of a vanilla cupcake but I said no to sips of Coke, gummi bears, fudge and some other desserts!
I don't think I'll ever be too strict but my 13 month old doesn't need to eat that stuff yet!

I'm pretty strict on some things because I refuse to have the child with no manners. I don't care what other people say. However, I also try to go with the flow and not make a big deal about most things. In the case of food with your inlaws I probably would have let it slide. They're making memories with your child and as long as you control what goes in their mouth when you're home then it's not a huge deal to me for the occasional gummy bear to slip in.
However, I also know that consistency is important and that if you allow it once it's likely to become a habit...in other words, I see both sides.

People always say that about us with Wagon Jr. (He never had a real cookie, bite of cake, piece of candy, or even juice or fruit snacks until he was well past 2.5 years old!) I don't care!

I agree that toddlers don't need to eat that stuff either. My mom and sister went behind my back and gave DD french fries after I specifically told them not to. My MIL will give her cupcakes and other sweets right in front of me. I want her to eat clean.

I expect this from y family as well. Your request is simple & they should respect it.
If you let a little bit slide then they will make you seem like the bad guy and make themselves seems like the good Gus. Pretty soon your LO will know to go to her uncle if she wants sweets:) and your rules will be undermined.

omg I'd freak if someone wanted to feed my kid coke!!!
thankfully my family does not eat crap ever - like NO soda and pretty much no sugar and would never ask to feed it to DS. Even though my mom has had 6 kids and I trust her explicitly, she still asks my permission to give him food - it's sweet

My brother used to think I was crazy for being so strict about TG's routine when she was an older baby. His baby's routine would be no routine he told me. He has a baby now that thrives on a routine and he's so excited about it because she's finally sleeping in her own crib. Revenge is sweet.

Ugh, I expect the same BS from DH's family. I think I am the only one who thinks junk is not acceptable baby and toddler food (including super sweet bakery cake!!)

My mom does that too. She wants to feed her sweets and sugar right before nap or bed time. I don't mind her having some ice cream, but she won't go to sleep if it's 7:30 pm and her bedtime is 8!

Ah, yes...my MIL does this with my 5 year old. Drives me crazy! I know I look like a crazy controlling mama, but I like my kid to be healthy!

I really don't understand why some people like to feed sugary junk food to kids that are not theirs. I'm lucky that both my family and in laws are very respectful in terms of what I allow LO to eat. I don't think you are being too strict at all. As the parent, you should be able to decide what your LO should and should not eat.

Man, we struggle with this right now too. DH and I are dieting and we're trying REALLY hard to keep LO off sugar as long as possible. We were over at MIL's last week and she had pie for dessert, and we all passed. Every noise LO made, everyone said "Oh, she see's the pie and wants some"... I'm like, guys, she doesn't even know what pie is :S

I've definitely become less strict with what my LO eats as he gets older, but who the heck thinks it's ok to give a 13 month old coke?!?!??!?! That's just crazy.

I don't think that is too strict at all! Gotta nip those sweet habits in the butt ASAP!
Thankfully MIL is really good about asking before giving M anything. But there have been times I'd rather say no and say OK instead but never anything like that.
My mom is the bad one!!! The one time she thought it was Ok to give her a bit of a cookie! At 6 months! I scolded her and she laughed it off like no big deal. but I don't think she'll be doing it again bc she was wired that night and I laid on the guilt pretty thick.

@sammyfab, you'd be surprised how many times, as a waitress, i was asked to put diet coke or coke into a sippy cup or bottle for a baby in a highchair. No.

I think they think I'm too protective of her... but they haven't met her yet so it's an opinion they've formed over Skype. BTW I think you were totally in the right, that was way too much processed gunk to try and shovel in her mouth without expecting you to have an opinion.

Haven't had my LO yet but my sister gets flack for this. For my nephew's first bday, she made regular cupcakes for everyone else and a naturallyl sweetened banana bread type cake for the bday boy with cream cheese "frosting" (just the cream cheese with apple juice concentrate, no sugar) He liked it plenty but didn't go crazy on it the way birthday kids usually do, but he was happy and he never knew what he was missing. She figured he has loads of time to learn how good cake is, why not let him keep thinking banana bread is the ultimate dessert?
A lot of my family thought she was kind of crazy for it, and sure, I would have liked to see him go to town on a chocolate cake, but he's her son and would it have been worth it for a photo op?
I say you were in the right. Coke for a baby??? That's insane.

No, but I know it will happen when he starts eating solids. Some people just love giving kids sweets! I doubt I will be super strict about it, but still I hope people ask me about anything they give him. What if it has nuts? Or if I wanted to see his reaction too his first ice cream?
