Was talking with a friend yesterday and I said something about how I need to look up a few newborn care things online to get ready. She rolled her eyes and said if it came down to that, I should just give her a call and ask, not use google. Then later I said something about how I find it annoying that people keep texting me random, unsolicited baby advice and she said "at least it's better than finding things on the internet!" Umm...why would one random friend's opinion on something be more reliable than an online source where I can read multiple peoples' views/opinions/experiences on something? People I encounter IRL are so close-minded about online stuff! Do people make fun of you for being web savvy when it comes to pregnancy, parenting, etc?

I had someone poke fun at me for reading books! I'm trying to rush through the L&D books and get to some newborn sleep/infant care, but i've gotten a couple of "oh god, I didn't read ANYTHING!!" comments. Like whoever goes in with the least amount of knowledge and still survives wins? I wasn't sure where that was coming from.

Not so much friends but my OB warned me against using Google while I was pregnant because although there is great information there's also a lot of one-sided and misleading stuff out there as well. She reminded me that the internet didn't know about my medical records. ;P

@rachiecakes: Generally I come to HB for online wisdom, but I think as long as you use common sense, nothing wrong with googling! For medical issues, I definitely would just call the doc.

Only my husband. But several people on here I consider my friends so I usually say "my friend said" and he's like, "what friend?". Then I end up saying, "well my friend from the baby site." I mean I could tell my husband that all babies are cloth diapered, BLW and all moms eat their placentas and he would believe me. We both are total noobs about the baby/pregnancy world!

DH doesn't really believe (yet!) that the HB community is the holy grail of baby wisdom, but I'm working on him.

@anonysquire: When I refer to something on HB, I usually say "I heard... " without naming the source.
Most people don't know my level of online research/reading, but my family good naturedly rolls their eyes at me. I'm just an over planner and over researcher by nature, so it's more like, Oh, you can probably find out about that online, you are so good at researching, than Oh god, I never read anything. Only DH knows about HB really-- when I was worried about going to Alaska at 18 weeks pregnant, I literally said, hang out, I need to ask if this is doable, and agreed to book the trip the next day, thanks to you ladies

Nope, but that's mostly because they don't want me bugging them with baby stuff! Most of my friends could not care less that I'm pregnant and don't want to hear much about it, so I think they're glad I go online to talk about baby stuff!

Some people mock me for researching parenting stuff in general... and yet I notice that when they have parenting issues, they ask me for advice.! I don't say anything though... the feeling of vindication is payment enough haha!

@Arden: Totally my DH is on board with this. He's the one who made me post a poll asking if we need an extra mattress for our PnP. Heheheh.
