Over the holiday, we had 4 separate people tell us to rub whiskey on LO's gums to help with teething pain. Do people actually do this?!

Lol! My dad said when I was a baby he asked my doctor about this, and the doctor went off on him and acted like he should be reported to child services. My dad was like "I wasn't going to give you a shot of it, but the guy acted like I was maniac!"
So, apparently even when I was a kid it was something you weren't supposed to do, but I wouldn't put it past my dad to have tried it anyways!

I've always heard that from older people! I'm pretty sure that LO would freak out if I was inclined to try it - what a gross taste!

Another one who was just told this yesterday...by my normally sensible and not crazy mother. She was so shy leading up to it too...
Mom: "I mean, I know its not recommended by the doctor but we used to.."
Me: "please don't even go there!"
Mom: "not a lot, just a, just a drop"
Me: "do you still want to babysit next weekend?"
Shakes head..

I really think this was a legit thing done in older generations. My dad claims to have done it once or twice with my sister and I.

My parents have joked about this being done for teething pain. If you put a drop on your finger and rubbed the baby's gums, it wouldn't do any harm, but I don't really know how beneficial it would be. I imagine a baby wouldn't love the taste either! My mom said when she was little and sick, her grandmother gave her milk with honey and a tiny bit of whiskey or bourbon, lol!

My dad just told me to do this with DS! He said he did it with us.

My 90yr old grandma said she used to do that when she was raising babies, but even she agreed there are much better practices now!

We rubbed whiskey on our dog's gums when she was cutting teeth because she was in pain. She calmed down right away and was able to fall asleep. It's not like you use a shot of liquor. Definitely not enough to do any harm. I'm sure most babies would be opposed to the flavor though!

@rachiecakes: hahahahahahhaha, so that's where it all began....
hehe, jk:)
I have heard this 100x. I don't get it but, I guess it worked? It would never cross my mind to even humor this.

DS is trying to cut a front bottom tooth, and it makes me want to rub whiskey on MY gums - A lot of it!

@grizz: Hahaha. I was demanding an excorcism the other day because teething has turned my sweet, happy boy into a demon child.
