I always put underwear, because I don’t wash the leotard every time. But full disclosure, you can often see her undies sticking out of the leotard. She doesn’t like wearing bike shorts over the leotard.

DD does ballet/tap (she's 3.5) but we always wear underwear under her tights and leos. I don't think it matters a whole lot at this age and I want her to be comfortable.

My 4 year old does dance and at first we always wore undies, which you could see sticking out of the leotard. After a little while, DD requested to not wear undies because they were getting bunched up under it. So now we do either with or without depending on DDs mood while getting dressed. Her comfort is what really matters.

No undies under leos/tights, unless it's a shortie unitard (so the undies don't show, other than VPL) and my daughter requests them. But usually I find that even in that case, they end up bunched up and she's picking at them, so I prefer she not wear them. My girls are about to be 4 and 6, and have danced/done gymnastics since 2.5, and this is how we've always done it. The only exception was when DD1 was still very newly potty trained, I had her sometimes wear those padded trainer undies if I was worried about small accidents during class.
I'm a former figure skater/dancer, and for some reason (habit, I guess), seeing undies poking out of leos bugs me - and I just can't imagine it's comfortable! I figure my kids will need to learn to go without at some point if they continue the sports, so they might as well be used to it

We always wear undies to ballet, and I can visibly see that other girls do too, haha. We do it for hygiene reasons--we don't wash her ballet outfits every time after 50 min of use.
Also, since it's ballet, we order skirted leotards and you can't see any panties (they would be under the tights anyway). Maybe gymnastics is different, but it probably just depends on if you want to wash after every use or not.

I did gymnastics for many years. Undies for practice, not for competition. You get docked points if your underwear or bra shows. However, lots of the moves involve tons of core strength and sudden stops, it is not abnormal for kids to have a little less bladder control, so definitely stick with undies for practice

None of the kids do at our gym. Having grown up a gymnast, wearing them with a leo seems as odd to me as wearing undies with a swimsuit.

@MrsRoo: With me, it was fine with me that my boxer briefs underwear was sticking out even by 9!

My 3 year old wears underwear with her leotard to gymnastics, but we always do bike shorts or the leotards with legs like shorts. It's mostly because at this age, I'm still trying to reinforce my personal rule that underwear is always required. She loves to streak and be naked, but I tell her that underwear is my minimum, so I don't want to contradict that just yet. If she ends up getting serious about a sport or dance, then we'll follow the typical customs as she gets older. Right now it's definitely just for fun.
