Yes!! It's almost as if the only punctuation mark available is the exclamation point when I type!

@Alivoo01: I write every post with tons of exclamation marks, and then I edit out every other one. It's sad.

haha, I do!! I always use two and smiley faces... I use those a lot too... I think because I encountered so much internet drama with people thinking I was saying something different than how I was saying it..

No. My friend, who has impeccable grammar and is a very good writer, once said something along the lines of, Your words should be enough to convey your excitement. If you need to use exclamation points, you haven't used your words well enough.
I still use it plenty, but that reasoning is always in the back of my head when I do, so I try to limit it and 'convey my excitement with my words'.

I work with a lot of Dutch people, and they use so so many exclamation points in their emails. I always wonder if it has a different meaning/connotation in the Netherlands.

@Coco Bee: Yes, in forums like this, the exclamation point and smiley face is necessary-- I am especially guilty of the to show I mean what I wrote in a nice way (literally almost put a smiley face, then stopped myself, and almost put an exclamation point).

@mrbee: omg! I never would have known!
I totally do! and I totally edit out every other one too!
I usually end up changing the last one in a paragraph to a period (like, I would change the one above. but I didn't. Hehe.)

@Foodnerd81: oh I know right! I have definitely said things that could be taken as "snarky" if the person reading it read it that way but was definitely never my intention! so smileys save me

Yes I do!! and lol and smileys and things too. I also use smileys to make sure people know I'm trying to be nice or silly...
I also very much overuse ... too..... lol.

I feel like if i don't have an exclamation point, people will mistake my words as being angry or annoyed.
I really hate overusing them, but sometimes it's just a necessary evil in the online world!
Gah, i did it again.

I use too many exclamation points!!!
For serious though, every time I write a work email I generally have to edit it and switch several exclamations to periods. One or two are okay, but I have the tendency to end every sentence with an exclamation point!

Yes! My husband pointed it out in an email I cc'ed him in on and now I'm conscious of it in emails and go back to edit. I'll use them with abandon on hellobee though.. !!!!

I just recently started using them more often, and I just wrote an e-mail, and went back and edited out FOUR of them because I looked crazy being so exclamatory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yes. it's gotten to the point now, where I'm trying to stop and I've had people ( after reading texts, or emails) ask me if everything is ok because I don't seem happy or I seem annoyed.

I just sent our organization's newsletter to my boss so she could proof it before I send it out, and her response was "looks good, but maybe edit out some of the exclamation points?"
So yeah, I guess I do.

@mrbee: Yes!! I always have to back and edit out some too! My last email to a colleague had 5 sentences, and 4 of them had !! so I had to go back and take some out... haha

@sweetchic: Wish that Gmail had some sort of way to count exclamation points. Then it could give you warning messages when you hit send:
"Your email has 40% more exclamation points than your average email! Are you sure you want to send this? Are you possibly drunk right now?"
coconut / 8483 posts
yes!!!! for some reason, I feel like ending a sentence with a period seems bitchy! and i always talk so excitable, that having a (!) at the end is just required.............!

I am powerless over exclamation points and my life has become unmanageable!!!!!!
pomegranate / 3716 posts
@mrbee: puahaha, I'm sure you could develop a gmail plugin for that... you're techy like that, right??
clementine / 828 posts
Ha! Yes, I pretty much have to edit out exclamation points in all my correspondence.
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@sweetchic: Haha my solution is to avoid drunken emailing.

@ms.janedoe: i was on an ellipse kick a couple years ago. but i do still like them!
pomelo / 5257 posts
Totally! Haha, I always tell DH his emails look so terse because he doesn't use any, but I know I use too many. I also review all the emails and texts I write and often take a couple out so it doesn't seem too over the top. I want to seem friendly, not psychotic! lol but it's really hard not to...without them my messages look so flat. Luckily my boss is a worse abuser than I am so I don't have to worry too much at work.
