@shopaholic: Ahh. Also, there are also only a few steps between each floor and two floors are on one side of the house and two floors on the other, if that makes sense. You don't have a full flight of stairs between each level, like you would in a townhome.

Wow, I had no idea ppl disliked split level homes so much!!! I never thought twice about them and really loved our home. For what it's worth, we didn't have a problem selling our home...

I think it really depends on how the floor plan is configured. I personally like a 4 level split over a 3 level split as there is way less wasted space (no crawl space) and both lower levels can be developed. I am a Realtor, I would say on average if there are any styles of homes that people would not like to include in their hunt, are most often split levels. I will go out on a limb and say this opinion will change from country to country as well considering the types of homes are so different! Where I'm from it's considered undesirable to not have a basement where as a lot of other regions it's unheard of to have one.

We moved (rentals) this year from a one-level to a split. I love it! Our bottom level is entirely open plan - with the exception of the garage and the guest bathroom - and all our bedrooms are upstairs. I love the separation of public and private areas too and it makes the house feel so much bigger (very clever use of space). I'd quite happily have this as a forever house if the yard wasn't so tiny!

I don't have anything against split levels either. We live in an apartment and our entrance is one 2nd floor. It's a little more stairs than a split level. When we buy our first home in the next 2-3 years, we will pretty much be open to anything that is a home with a yard.

I hate them, too! My BIL's house is like that. DH and I always talk about how we do not like their house set up after our visits!

Didn't realize there were so many people that don't like split levels...?...We live in a split (our first house) and have never thought twice about it. We have a nice entry that we tiled with a slate mosaic which is open to our main living area by a wrought iron railing and up 3 steps. Our 3 BRs and bath are up 6 steps which is plenty to make it a separate living area. Family room/laundry and 1/2 bath are one step down from the entry. I'd post a pic but my house is a wreck right now as were in the midst of about 10 different projects before baby gets here. : )
