DH works in a niche market and will probably always be in demand. He loves what he does and will probably stay where he is forever. He has a low risk of getting laid off. I work in health care so I will always have a job... Finding the perfect one is so hard though! Having DH be in a good job allows me to work part time and change positions as needed. I guess I would say we both have stable careers. It did take DH 10 years of work experience to get there and I had to go to grad school to be where I am. What about everyone else?

I'm a SAHM butmy husband has a pretty stable job. He does computer programming for the department of veterans affairs. Government jobs are usually fairly stable so that's good

We both have very stable jobs, even though I have decided that this is not waht I watn to do long term, but will stick it out another couple years. DH has been with his company for 11 years, and I've been with mine for 6 years, with little to no fear of being laid off.

My husband is a tenured NYC teacher, so he's secure & stable unless the Mayor does something crazy. Mine is less stable...I always tell him I should've gone into the medical field. But I've been in my field for about 12 years so I'm at a level that makes it more secure (I'm in PR & marketing).

I'd say I have a very stable job as a tax paralegal (I am head hunted almost constantly because I work specifically in tax, which is harder to find than paralegals in other areas of law).
DH's line of work as a plumber/HVACer is not the most stable. They lay off more than half their staff every winter, and the guys that do stay on (DH has been lucky so far) get 8 hours a week until May. It's pretty brutal considering how often the government goes on and on about how we need more skilled tradespeople.

Neither of us is sure that what we are doing now is what we want to do for the rest of our lives. But we are good at our jobs, make good money, and don't have fear of losing our jobs. My hubs has limited experience for his age because he played in the NFL for five years after college before joining corporate America (or as I tell him 'The Real World')

Hubby works at our own business and I would say it's stable as long as we own it.
I work in the financial industry which fluctuates drastically each day (company makes money off of the interest rates set by the fed.), and lay offs are extremely likely.

I think I've found what I want to do for the rest of my career and I'm confident in the stability of my current job. DH is switching careers (or actually going back to his chosen career after a brief moment of confusion: :)). This will be his first year teaching, so after 3 years his career will be very stable.

I'd say my husband and I are pretty secure, even if I'm not making a predictable amount of money as a writer and editor. I find a surprising amount of security in my work. I'm self-directed, so I can't fire myself. I have valuable skills that most people don't have, and working in publishing is all I've ever wanted to do.
My husband works in information security, a pretty secure (obviously
) and growing field with good money in it. He just got a great new job. We're very positive about the future.

The person that was in DH's position before him had been there for 25 years. And he broke every rule in the book. They don't fire people there easily. So I'd say he has pretty good job security. He's the director of communications for a trade association in the apartment industry. He puts together their monthly magazine, takes photos at all of their many, fun events, does their yearly directory, and a variety of other things. He's also overseeing the creation of an App of their yearly directory as they phase our the paper version. He's always doing something different, it is really interesting and challenging, and the pay/benefits are great. He can stay there forever
I work for an attorney in a small law office, and my boss is consistently happy with my work and always says how glad he is to have me as an employee. I am pretty sure my job here is stable, unless the whole company closes.

We are both in pretty stable careers. I am a nurse, and have a permanent position, so it would be nearly impossible for them to lay me off, short of me doing something really unethical. DH is a computer engineer and works for a defence contractor, who provides training targets for many different countries, so even if 1 country cuts military spending there are other purchasers.

I'm a sahm. Dh is a computer programmer .... and his company is going through a big merger which freaks me out. Hes not worried, but I am.

I used to be a lot more comfortable with our stability but my mom was recently laid off in her "stable" health field after 29 years with the same hospital. That devastating turn of events helped me to realize that nobody is truly stable at any career and anything can happen at any time.
I'm not currently working since the school year ended but I'll be staying home with our daughter when she's born in August. I plan on maintaining my teaching license though in case I ever need to go back to work.
My husband's job is in no way stable yet very stable at the same time. There's high demand at this point and I don't see trains going anywhere any time soon and he has nationwide seniority so we could move if we had to. However, they're constantly trying to go to a one man crew (instead of the current 2-3) or replace a man with a remote control. There's also the risk of being terminated based on something happening. They have what's called the 8 deadly decision and if they accidentally do one of those things they are automatically fired. There are other things that can add up in points and lead to getting dismissed. It's a little scary at times knowing that at any given point he could be done but that's why we try to save like crazy and live within our means and always be thinking of backup careers if he needs them.

DH is self employed which makes me nervous. My job is very stable at the moment but is prone to vulnerability during economic downturns.

I’ll be a SAHM when our baby is born but my husband is in a stable career. He works in the beer industry and they haven’t had any issues, even when the economy in general is. He’s not sure that he wants to stay there forever but he won’t leave until he has another stable job (And he’s not looking…he’s happy where he is for now) since he’ll be the breadwinner.

We're aid workers, so nothing is ever set in stone. I'm a doula when we're in the USA, so I never know how many clients I'll have any given year.
However, I am hoping to continue my education to become a midwife, and that will be much more stable.

My husband is a tenured professor, so his position is as stable as one can get. Unless the entire University shuts down, he has a job.
My job is as stable as most peoples. I have a specialized skill set, which would be very helpful if I was laid off as they are skills I could transfer to a new company or use in order to work for myself.

I'm a SAHM. DH is in the Army which is a pretty stable job. They are making some major cuts though and that freaks me out.

I'm not sure anyone really can be considered recession proof, but the particular place I'll be working did well in the recession so hopefully it will be stable (as long as the job does end up working out after baby!)
DH works for the government but I think just based on the specifics of what he does/where he works, it's pretty stable. (DH's job is still hiring through the crappy economy, although they have taken pay cuts.)

DH is in a very stable career. He has been with the same company for over 10 years and keeps moving up. In fact, there is the possibility of moving internationally in our future.
I was managing a wine bar, but when I went on bed rest at 20 weeks, my employer gave up my position because he couldn't hold it until after I had my baby. So I guess I technically am unemployed right now. I am hoping to go back to work when DD is 5 months old or so (she is currently 4 weeks). I guess I will have to start looking!

We are both self-employed. When we start a new site though, we don't draw a salary... sometimes for a few years. That can be pretty hard.

My current job is not technically stable since I'm a contractor, but I'm pretty confident that I'm stable for at least the next fiscal year. That's how it works for contractors in a non-profit. But even if something happens or my contract doesn't get renewed after this FY, I can always easily find another contract with a different company, or take another job. My industry was basically cut during the recession (which is why I got laid off and then was a SAHM for 18 months) but now that the economy is bouncing back, I get calls from recruiters every week.
Wagon Sr.'s job is very stable. Jobs in academia tend to be pretty stable, and his position is a pretty unique one in that he works for a non-profit, but his specific position brings in $$ for the university. Plus his boss loves him and other departments are dying to poach him... so I feel pretty confident that no matter what happens, he'll land on his feet, or even better!

I'm a SAHM now, well, kinda. I am a PT nanny and I would say as a nanny it's pretty stable. I worked FT for them long before I was pregnant, after a year I got laid off cause her husband's business wasn't going well. But only 4 months later they hired me back cause his business really took off. Now things are consistently good, they downsized houses so they have more $$ to put toward childcare etc.
For my husband, I would say his job is pretty secure. He is a professor at a private business college, the only mathematics teacher there. As he's the only one and they'd been searching for two years before him, I would say it's pretty stable. He gets great end-of-quarter reviews consistently. He is good at what he does.

I'm going to be a tenure-track professor starting in the fall. If I manage to get tenure (in 6 years!), then I'll have a ridiculously stable job. DH is an architect, and the market is really bad in architecture right now, so we're always worried that he could lose his job.

I am not really stable, I work in grant funded research so every 5 years there is a chance I could lose my job. DH is a computer programmer and fairly stable (even if he doesn't stay at his current job he is able to do short term-often turning long term-contract work).

DH and I work in a pretty stable industry, but we aren't immune to layoffs esp since we both work for large public companies. What we have going for us is our years of experience so even in the worst case scenario it most likely wouldn't be hard for us to get work elsewhere quickly.

My husband makes a product that is always in demand. His company is the #1 in the world for the product so his job is very stable. I work with a realtor so I never know how much I'm going to work week to week.

I would say fairly so. I'm in biotech research, so while the company I work for may be vulnerable to economic shifts, the industry itself is always hiring. DH works for himself, so I don't really know how to gauge the stability of that. He adapts his business to whatever is "hot"/in demand, so he's never working with anything that is dying out.

I'm not really sure. DH's current job is pretty secure but not nearly as much as some others. I don't think he is in danger of losing his job, and if he wanted to stay with his company indefinitely, he most likely could. He has a broad skill set, which is both a good and bad thing in terms of other opportunities for him.
As for me - I'm in social media marketing, which is an interesting thing. My position is in high demand right now, but it won't always be that way. I don't worry about being able to stay employed in the marketing/PR industry, but I do wonder about what my job description will be 10 or 20 years from now.
@MamaMoose: That's pretty cool that your hubs was in the NFL! And that he was able to make the transition to a successful second career. My dad played MLB for several years and had a hard time moving on...
@chopsuey119: I am always fascinated by your husband's career. He seems kind of Christian Grey like, seeing as he's a jet-setting entrepreneur! ...Tell me you've read 50 Shades of Grey!

Thankfully, yes! DH is in banking (retail, not investment) and I am in HR/Labor market.
Both of us are in stable industries, and also have worked to build our reputations up in our companies, so thankfully have job security.

I have a difficult time explaining what my Dh husband does, but he owns a couple of businesses and does independent consulting/coaching in the agile software development industry!
His traveling sucks, but when he's not traveling it's great cause he's home 24/7.
