I used to believe this, but my mom changed my mind. I wasn't very smart growing up, but she just believed in me. She never lost faith, and we slowly worked together to figure stuff out. I can never pay her back for believing in me!

There is a very Japanese concept that there's no such thing as being smart... it all comes down to hard work, focus and dedication. I just read this neat book called "The Myth of Ability" which riffs on this theme, and I think it's really true!

Over time I've come to believe that being smart or gifted just means you have a temporary advantage over your peers. The only way to get a long term advantage is to work hard. The Myth of Ability book talks about how a lot of people who seemed dumb/slow at the beginning of a lesson actually ended up being the best performers by the end of the lesson! That kind of blew my mind, but I'm not surprised. I've seen a lot of smart hares get passed by harder-working tortoises!

In any case, I just find it more useful to believe that being smart doesn't matter. You can't really control how smart you are... but you can control how hard you work!!

Do you believe that some kids are smart and have more natural, inherent ability?
