I was a member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), but recently dropped my membership while I was pregnant and didn't have time to attend any of the events anymore.

@MsLipGloss: lol... Makes me think of a lot of alcohol I want to be part of a bar association
Btw I didn't know you're a lawyer!

Yes, several. Both my state and county bar association, a local women's bar organization, and a state-wide organization specific to my area of practice. I'm actively involved in the women's bar organization and find it so helpful to have a group of women in the industry (most of which have children) to relate to.
@Mrs. Pen and @MsLipGloss: I wish the bar organizations were a different kind of "bar" organization
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Mrs. Pen: @NorCalWayfarer: There was plenty of alcohol in the beginning . . . it was not exactly a smooth transition! And yeah, *Bar* organization is completely misleading (I should have read the fine print!). I daydream about opening my own bar . . . in the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose ( a great movie, btw!), the attorneys in that movie meet at a bar, Side Bar (great name for a legal theme bar!) . . . ever since I saw it, I have wanted my own *Side Bar*.

@MsLipGloss: Bahahaha. OMG I bet you have a million puns like that readily available

@MsLipGloss: on a more serious note: what type of law do you practice?
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Mrs. Pen: It wasn't my original plan (to become an attorney), but here I am nonetheless!
ETA: I do liability defense work . . . I defend a lot of construction companies and hospitals/doctors in civil litigation.

@MsLipGloss: @Mrs.Pen: I don't know if I'm a bad person for this, but whenever I have to sit through one of those required substance abuse MCLE presentations, it makes me want a drink!
@MsLipGloss: I know *so* many former lawyers who now do something completely different -- a lot of photographers, bakers, etc. I think opening your own "Side Bar" sounds fabulous!!!!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@NorCalWayfarer: In that case, I would like to own my own Side Bar (for the *free* drinks, of course! . . . if I have an *office* upstairs, maybe I can deduct it all from my taxes!), be a Pilates instructor, and bake (intensely awesome) cupcakes. Seriously.

Another member of the bar - state and local for me. I'm maintaining my license and memberships even though I'm home for now.

@MsLipGloss: @NorCalWayfarer: Good for you both!! Are either of you actively involved in any of them?
nectarine / 2134 posts
@LindsayInNY: Yes! I'm on the Board of my local women's law organization and next year will be a delegate to our state women's bar organization. I've found the women in those two organizations have been amazing role models/mentors/friends. I also try to attend some of the county bar social events, especially the "young" attorney events.

@NorCalWayfarer: I've wanted to get more involved but the NYC chapters are just so darn big!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@LindsayInNY: Not actively for probably a year (end of pregnancy and since LO was born). I would like to, though, because you can never have too much support! And it's a small world out there for women attorneys!
nectarine / 2134 posts
@LindsayInNY: I'm in a much smaller area than you are, but have found the women's org to be really tight-knit. I joined my first year out of law school and everyone was really welcoming -- I joined the board my second year and from there have been getting more involved and they encouraged me to become involved in the state-wide women's group. Just jump on in!! Good luck!

ABA, State Bar Association and various local bar associations. Need to be more active.

@LindsayInNY: @MsLipGloss: Our area also has a "mother attorneys mentoring" group that I am planning on joining in the future. They have brown bag lunches and family-friendly social events.

@NorCalWayfarer: I just looked - we have a local county women's one that I'll have to keep in mind!
