I just bought myself my first piece as a late birthday gift, trees in watercolor. I realized the only other original pieces I bought were for the nursery, one pastel drawing, one watercolor carrot and a couple little watercolor birds I've yet to put up.

Not yet, but we are looking. DH and I need a large piece for the wall along the stairs. It has a high ceiling so we want something to fill up the space. The search continues...

YES! We have several artists that we like, but our current favorite does work in different types of styles (draw/paint/stencil, etc.)

I have watercolor prints in the nursery and I have a fair amount of photography up in the house. Not just us as a family, but stuff I've had matted and framed

Not yet. Atlanta hosts an art festival in July I want to attend to pick up some original pieces and meet the actual artist.

Yes, we have a pretty eclectic mix of oils, acrylics, pen-and-ink sketches, and photography that we've collected over the years. Most of it isn't particularly expensive or "important," but we love it all and because of that, it fits together even though the styles, colors, and subject matter are very different. We've gotten most of it at art fairs or art walks.

Nope...but interested as a friend is in the art industry and has a wealth of knowledge about them. DH and I just don't know enough to invest. But would like to in the future.

No. I am not interested in it enough to care. I wish I loved a particular style, but I don't...which doesn't mean I don't appreciate it.

Yes!! We love local art and enjoy supporting artists in places we visit. I'm slowly increasing the amount I will spend, as there have been a few pieces I've regretted not purchasing because I wouldn't let myself spend a ton. We visit art festivals every year and I hope to add many pieces that we really love as the years pass.
My father is an artist, and so I grew up in a household where art was highly celebrated. My parents have actually housed a few struggling artists over the years. Always interesting.

I attended the same ATL festival at 19 and sat in a workshop given by the curator to Bill Cosby. I even ran into an artist that hawked his ware in Eastern Market (DC) several years prior. At that time my mom was able to get a good deal on several pieces. When we saw him again in Atlanta his art was bigger, his prices were higher

We just bought our first "real" piece of art. It's a photo by an artist we saw in a gallery when we still lived in NYC. What I like about it, other than that I think it is beautiful, is that the type of process used makes it an original with no reproductions possible. DH and I both really love photography and plan to continuing investing in it when we can.
My former high school art teacher opened a small gallery in my home town and I bought one of her paintings a few years ago. We also have a signed lithograph by my favorite children's author and it is hanging in DS's room.

I don't buy and display artwork for the same reason I could never get a tattoo... I'm too fickle and my tastes change too much!! I'm even this way about photography of the family-- I like framing smaller pictures but I don't want to get a huge canvas or framed print made because I'm afraid I will change my mind or not like it later. Maybe someday when I'm old and rich I can hire an art consultant like The Captain in HIMYM 
I do love to appreciate art, but I just can't commit.

Yes. We have bought two pieces of original art from local artists. Every time i see it hanging in our living room, it makes me happy! We have also bought a few prints. There's a Chilean artist i love, and i'm hoping to buy one of his pieces in a few years.
@mrsjyw: Art should definitely be about what you love as opposed to an investment, but that's just me. It's awesome you have a friend whose knowledge you can draw from!

Yep. We live in a really artsy town, so it's happened naturally ... We buy a lot of prints, paintings, and photographs.

We do! It started on a trip to Australia where I fell in love with Aboriginal art. We came home with one that started our collection. We're trying to buy one on each major trip (or 1/year), but it doesn't always work out. We just bought our third piece, one from a local artist that we love.
