I think it's better to sing live since that's what everyone is there to see, but I honestly don't care that she didn't. I know she is a very talented vocalist and must have had a good reason for not singing live. She wanted to give the best performance possible and if that meant pre recording then so be it.

@mrs. wagon: I read on CBS that they cant really confirm if she sang over the track or just lip synced

Remember when Christina Aguilera flubbed the words or Aretha Franklin couldn't hit the notes live? Remember when Jessica Simpson forgot the words on Dolly Parton's KennedyHonors? That's why performers pre record the songs. Even lip synching takes work...Whitney Houston sweated up a storm and was not live.

@Mrsbells: you can clearly hear two voices, both her, so unless they played two separate vocal tracks at once, she is clearly singing over the pre-recorded track.

Today really must be a slow news day.

@MRS. LEMON-LIME: Whitney sang into the microphone. The microphone just wasn't turned on.

There is a standard protocol where anyone that sings the Star Spangled Banner live (usually at a sporting event) records a "protection copy." It's mentioned here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Spangled_Banner_(Whitney_Houston_song)#Lip-sync_controversy

The artist usually doesn't have control over whether or not the protection copy is used for the broadcast, or if the live audio is used.

The song is notoriously difficult to sing, since it covers such a huge range. That's why this protocol is so standard at live events - especially those outdoors and when it is cold.

@mrs. wagon: @PrincessBaby: Yeah they played that on the local radio station, they said it was legit from a few years back. She came out afterwards saying "she was having an off morning" yeah I think we could all hear that! ha

@mrbee: learned something new. I wonder if we will ever know if Beyonce or Jennifer Hudson sang into the mic.

@MrsSCB: They always prerecord the orchestral music just in case it's too cold...imagine trying to move your fingers on a violin!

@Mrs. J: Oh I can totally sympathize! I actually play the violin haha. I can barely move my hands when they're cold, I can't even imagine trying to play something complicated. I don't think a lot of people realized that the band was also pre-recorded, not just her voice, though. I wonder if people's lips would get stuck to brass instruments in the cold...that would be awful!
