I'm a crazy high-volume library patron (I think my record is like 29 books out at once, and I LOVE looking things up in the catalog and putting them on hold. It is like shopping. But free).
However, I've never checked out any books for LO, in part probably because it just seems a little icky to bring home these books that have likely been slobbered and snotted and gnawed on by countless snotty grubby kids, before my snotty grubby kid gets his hands on it. But then I think that I'm missing out on this great resource, and it's not like they're going to hand it over still sticky from some other kids hands. So should I suck it up and go pick up Moo Baa La La La on the way home from work today, or do you stay away from library kids' books too?

I check out board books and wipe them down with a vinegar mixture.

We haven't checked any books out for LO yet. I think if we did, we would wipe them down ourselves before giving them to DS.

I haven't yet, but I've had people give me used books and we just clean them before giving them to LO.

I think we are going to start! Dh says we could just go to a second hand store but the library is the cheap way to go!

LO has never put books into her mouth so I've always thought it was fine. I think all library books (not just ones for kids) must be dirty anyway. I wouldn't let her bring them to bed with her , but otherwise, I think it is fine. We clean her hands a lot.

My son demolishes all of his books so I wouldn't feel comfortable giving him a public book. I'd probably end up having to pay for it so might as well buy him a new one of his own!

This thread makes me laugh a little.
I work at a library. Yes, library books are germy, and not just the kid ones. We wash our hands at the end of our shifts.
But I would NOT suggest cleaning the books. You're more likely to damage the book than to prevent your kid from getting a cold! Many libraries clean the books anyway!
I haven't personally put the board books in my mouth, but I can safely say I have never gotten sick from a library book (and I'm there all the time).
I wouldn't worry about it. Go forth and enjoy your public library.

I checked out 3 about a month ago but I felt like I had to sanitize each book and in the end, I just returned them to the library. What I do now is go to the library and read the books to her there and just buy the ones that seems to appeal to her.
I think I'd feel more comfortable checking books out when she's older and when kids her age aren't so snotty and drooly.

Nope. I never go to the library, and sanitizing the books would drive me nuts.

To start with, you should just buy Moo Baa Lalala as it is a favourite around here. Secondly I think that it's sometimes nice to check books out to see if you actually want to read them 5 million times before you buy them.
I don't think I've ever worried about book germs, but we don't get sick much (possibly because we get exposed to lots of germs, so we're tough?)

No, I want to have a bunch of books on hand, and I have seen how much my nieces put hte books in their mouth that I think I want my own set for my LO so there are no mixed germs!
