Do you close their door when your LO is sleeping?
Wondering if I'm weird....haha.

All sleep! For naps so that I don't wake her up, at night I think you are supposed to for fire safety!
pear / 1737 posts
Yep! For light and noise protection and also so the cat doesn't wake her up like he does us. I'd close my door if I could, but the cat would be loaded.

My little one in the crib, yes always. My older one likes it open a crack so he can easily get up to pee.

Always! We want to limit the noise around them when they are trying to sleep, so closing the door is a must.
pomelo / 5573 posts
Definitely - keep the noise and cats out, and keep the white noise in.

I have all sorts of answers
For the 18 month old, I close the door completely at nap, and leave it open about 2 inches at bedtime.
For the 5 year old, door open. We sleep with our door open also.

All sleep. We have dogs so if they bark, the closed door muffles the noise.
There was a few weeks where we couldn't get them to go down for bedtime if we closed the door, so we would leave it open until they fell asleep then I would close it.

Everyone here sleeps with doors closed. We have cats. They are assholes if doors are open.
pear / 1728 posts
Yes, always! I don't want the cat wandering in there or the dogs' barking to wake her up.

I close them most of the way but they are never completely shut.

We always closed the door until DS1 requested that we keep it open. Since then, our door is open as I fear he'll run into it in the middle of the night.. DS2's door is always closed and will remain that way until he asks for it to be open.

I close A's door (19m) as soon as I put her down and walk out the room. D's door (4.5y) stays cracked open until Hubs and I go to bed, at which point we close it fully. Fire safety and the cat are our reasons. I'd prefer to close D's door right away to reduce noise, but he prefers it to stay cracked open a bit.

Los' door is closed, mostly so that our dogs don't go in and out, jump on lo1's bed, or wake them up with their barking. In the middle of the night, if one of them wakes up/I have to go in, I won't latch the door all the way (the click is loud), so it's only mostly closed.
We sleep with our door open so that lo1 can come in. She can open our doors from the inside of rooms but not as easily from the outside (ie she can pull them open, but pushing them open is apparently harder to her).

We don't make LO sleep in his crib for naps at home. When we tried he wakes up. However, if we did we would close the door just like we do for nighttime sleep. LO's room is right at the top of the stairs and unless the door is shut you can easily here the TV noise below. We don't shut the door because that makes noise, but it's closed. Our baby monitor alerts us to noises and movements.

No. All of our doors are always open. LO does have a baby gate in his doorway.

For our youngest, yes for all sleep, mainly because of noise and light. Our oldest gets scared when he wakes up and the door is closed, so we keep his open. We also sleep with our door open. I always grew up with our doors open when we slept, so it's not foreign to me.

All doors are closed in our house. Otherwise the kids would wake up way too early. Or they'd wake up before we go to bed. Also, our dog might sneak into one of their rooms if the doors were open and she might wake them up.

I close them almost all the way, but not. My aunt had a casual friend/acquaintance whose kids died because there was a fire and their kids closed door got stuck shut. Just can't do it.

I never knew about fire safety!
I keep my baby's door closed for light and noise purposes. But I have the nest monitor in her room and we watch her on the ipad the entire time. I guess unless I'm asleep, too!

I always close it - unless LO is sick then I leave it cracked for easy entry to check her. DD requests her door be closed - just not latched.
I find it interesting, all our grandparents do NOT latch it - since they never had monitors this was their monitor...leaving the door cracked enough to hear the babes!

Doors are open now at night that the girls are 5 and 2 1/2, but I used to close doors when baby. I do close door at nap for the 2 1/2 year old if she's in her room (she usually naps in our room on the weekends, and it's in the back of the house so quieter)
pear / 1837 posts
My girls share a room. Door is closed completely until DH and I got to bed then it's just pushed to. Our door stays open.

For those that close for fire safety... I actually asked a cousin who's a fire scientist if it was better to keep the door open or closed. He said as long as you have smoke detectors IN your bedrooms, it's better to keep them open. Then if there's a fire elsewhere in the house, the smoke will reach the room quicker, setting off the alarm, and you'll get out earlier. If you keep the door closed, it'll block the smoke until there's enough for it to seep under the door.
Unless all your alarms are wired together and go off at the same time.

Nope. I heard about the fire safety thing last year but my kids share and my dd won't sleep with it closed.

We used to always close so the cats wouldn't bother her, but lately she's been asking for it to stay open so we crack it. The cats have no interest in her anyway.

Closed for all sleep to keep the animals out of his room. Also, his room is close to the living room so it helps keep the noise down (along with his white noise machine).
Our door stays open though because the animals sleep with us.

All sleep. I used to keep LO's door slightly opened and my door opened when he was a baby.
grapefruit / 4988 posts
Always closed. Otherwise we end up with cats pouncing on us all night long (also I don't trust them with the baby).
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
All sleep. They all have white noise but I don't want to wake them up! We watch them on monitors.
pineapple / 12053 posts
All sleep for noise. And I just feel better having my door closed!
pomegranate / 3658 posts
Always closed.
We leave our own door open just so the dogs (who sleep with us) will hear any intruders and raise hell. They're the alarm system.
pomelo / 5628 posts
Yes but I keep mine open. I wish I didn't have to! (It's for the dog not the child.)
honeydew / 7968 posts
@Mommy Finger: same with us. Used to close it; stopped when my kids would say they were scared and wanted the door open.
I voted never, but the answer is usually....
