I totally tear up! I usually put onions under water when I'm peeling them though, which seems to help a lot.
Do you cry when you sliced onions?

Yes! And pregnancy has made me even more sensitive to them! I make DH do it.

Yes, but now I cheat, quarter them and through them in the mini food processor.

Only if my contacts aren't in. I need to remember the water trick. I also read on one of those "life hack" lists that if you chew gum while cutting onions you won't tear up, but have not tried myself to confirm!

Rarely. When I get a strong onion the tears pour down my face though!

Haha yes it always burns so much, I try and get DH to do onions

Yes! And I learned the hard what that it's not a good idea to chop onions while baby wearing. He tears up too!

Always and really heavy. Yellow onions are the worst. I hate chopping onions.

Yes, and I cook a lot, which means I end up chopping onions pretty much every day.
So I asked for these from DH a couple Christmases ago and they totally work! http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/ae2d/

@mrbee: I've never understood the under water thing-- you run them under water as you peel, then chop on the chopping board? Is that it?
I used to not tear when I wore contacts, but since Lasik it is a little bit worse. Come to think of it I do think it's worse pregnant. Sometimes holding a sip of water in your mouth helps some, but not on a strong one.

@hergreenapples: oh man. those are pretty epic, I might have to request some of those for my birthday!!!!!!

If you have any swimming goggles, that would probably help too. Just need to keep the fumes out of your eyes.
I hate when I chop onions withouy my contacts in. It makes it sooooo terrible.

You can also try lighting a candle right next to your cutting board, which is what i do when I'm not wearing my contacts.

Never! We cook with onions a LOT so thank goodness they don't affect me!

@hergreenapples: I totally wanted those goggles! I tear up but my husband is way worse. Sometimes if I am chopping in the kitchen he is a mess anywhere in the house. He loves when I make green chile stew but he hates the amount of onions I have to cut. He leaves the house while I do it and then I have to open all the windows and doors and turn on the fans.

I find sweet onions to be easiest on the eyes so I usually buy them for that reason. Yellow onions are the worst ever!

@Mrs. Tricycle: awww, good thing you told me! I wouldn't have really thought about that.
I buy the pre chopped baggies just to avoid it or I will only quarter them and quickly throw them into the crockpot or whatever. Honestly, I avoid onions as much as I can because I hate dealing with them.

@hergreenapples: I have those! Love them. Mine are pink.
If you look at the reviews on Amazon, people explain what they use them for other than protection from onions. One man wrote that he liked to wear them when watching TV to keep his eyes from getting dried out.

Yes.....it is horrible.
I usually chop them wearing my snowboard goggles.

@Foodnerd81: me too! I never teared up when I wore contacts but after LASIK my eyes are a mess everytime I chop onions.
@Mrs. Train: will you share your green chili recipe? My husband was born in New Mexico and we have a freezer full of roasted Hatch green chilis but I don't have a good green chili recipe!

sharp knife and cold onions....no more tears!
I can slice up a whole sack of onions without a tear as long as they're refrigerator cold. And I'm definitely no genetic freak, because putting leeks through the juicer makes me cry every time...

@sandy: absolutely, I put it on my menu this week so I will take some pictures and write if up for you.

I wear a pair of my DH's safety glasses. They kind of work!
