I have naturally curly hair (that usually looks like a rats nest) but I straighten it most days. I don't curl it (like...soft waves/barrel curls) because I've never learned how.
How do you wear your hair? Any tips on soft curls for beginners?

Wavy hair here, and I blow dry, straighten, and curl my hair about four times a week. It sucks, but my wavy hair sucks more.

No need for me to curl my hair. It ranges from wavy to curly depending on how I style it.

I have frizzy curly hair! Usually, I'll shower the night before and blow dry it straight. In the morning, I'll curl it. I use a 1 1/4 inch barrel ceramic curling iron and do it in sections.
So I'll take a clip and pull my hair up leaving just a section of it down underneath. I'll divide that into smaller sections and clip for later. I'll start at the root and curl, taking a bit more into the curling iron as I go so that the root gets curled too (my hair flattens as the day goes on). I do that until I've got the entire section, root to tip in the curling iron and then release it. Then on to the next section!

@2PeasinaPod: this sounds like my hair! Frizzy! Can you (would you mind) posting a pic of your curled hair? I could make this gold if you want

I do sometimes, but I usually lose patience about halfway around my head so there are always sections that look different. Plus they don't hold very long so I'm more likely to straighten it.
I have mostly straight hair, but if I don't comb it out and let it air dry after a shower it's sort of wavy.

I do what @2PeasinaPod: does! Though I think my curling iron may be bigger. I'm not sure!

I have super curly hair and I just let it be, haha. I use Deva curl hair products (leave in conditioner and gel) that I scrunch into my hair and air dry

i do, but not everyday. it's so much faster now that it's short! it used to take an hour & a half when it was long, so i rarely curled it myself.

I have funky, uneven waves in my hair. It looks like I went to bed with wet hair if I don't fix it! I use a straightener to make big, loose curls...Its really fast!

I do big curls on the wknds. I use a 1.5 inch iron and big sexy hair spray!

Wow. That's a big time investment @mrs. bird: !!
This picture is my gift to HB (my IG friends know the story) but this is what my hair looks like today. Generally I straighten it but I'm too lazy bc it looks awful straight. I'm growing it.out and it flips out a la Mary Tyler Moore style. We have family pics soon and want pretty curls!

How horrible is it that I can't find any pictures of my hair curled?? I'm looking!

@babyjmama: their stuff is awesome!! Seriously my hair is so much healthier when I started using it a couple years ago. I usually buy it off Amazon, but Sephora sells it online too (though not in all the stores)

@babyjmama: We can add frizzy rat-nest hair to our bf-ness
I recently bought a 1 1/2" curling iron and curl all my hair when I want it to look nice. I've tried curling the frizz, and curling straightened hair, and it does NOT work if I straighten my hair first. I curl similar to how @2PeasinaPod: replied.
Some ridiculousness for your enjoyment (first pic is just mousse, second is using a curling iron)

@nana87: totally checking it out!!
@swurlygurl: oooOOIOooo maybe you need to come over, I'll make mimosas, you teach me how to curl my hair

I wear my hair just straight most days. It's naturally straight so it's easier. When I'm feeling fancy I use my straightener to make loose curls. I don't have a curling iron. Lol
Not a great picture but you can see they're very loose and mostly at the ends.

@babyjmama: DEAL! Not that I'm any sort of expert, but your hair seems pretty similar to mine, and I've learned how to deal with it somewhat decently... haha

My hair is straight and I rarely curl it. I've had luck curling with a straightening iron.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
I obviously have no need to curl my hair, but I've curled some friends'. There are a ZILLION Youtube videos that are super helpful. I would suggest leaving your hair dirty (skip the shampoo) and let it dry naturally with a little leave-in conditioner (skip the straightening).

@Danizaur: I want this! Can I borrow your hair? I just want my hair to grow a few inches and I'll be happy!
@swurlygurl: I def haven't cared un a loooong tine but my job is dealing w/the public all day so I'm more vain these days

My hair is straight and I generally curl it when I want to look extra nice. I either use a flat iron (google for tutorials) or I use a styling wand. Honestly it isn't HARD it just takes a little patience and practice.
watermelon / 14467 posts
I have curly hair, but I do use a 1.5 inch curling iron to do loose curls. And since I'm lazy, I usually only curl the top layer. I curl out and away from my face.
Pic one is in it's frizzy, rainy day glory. Pic two is after I took the time to curl it all.

Use a curling wand rather than a curling iron! The wand gives the soft curls and waves rather than the barrel curls.

@grizz: I am going to try this over the weekend. My hairdresser has shown me but I still can't seem to do it.

@Smurfette: I swear by her tutorials!
This is second day hair curled on my straightener. I blow dry smooth with a root pumper or a blowout mousse then I work a few big curls in with my straightener. I only wash every other day.

@evansjamie: gorgeous! I love both styles!!
@loveisstrange: I don't have a wand but will be watching this when I get home!
@grizz: I want to be you.
Oh, and I LOVE kate from the small things! I follow her on IG!

I wrap my hair around the barrel and don't even use the clamp. Hold the barrel parallel to the floor and wrap . Hold for a few seconds and then pull the barrel down. I used two different sized irons to get my hair like this
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
Nope, I'm the same way. Mine is naturally curly, so I've never learned. It's probably been curled 3 or 4 times in my life, including prom and my wedding.
coconut / 8483 posts
sometimes! mine is super straight and flat, so I use a curling wand to get some loose ones every now and then
pineapple / 12234 posts
@grizz: so pretty!!
I do sometimes but it's difficult with curly hair. I have to blow dry on low heat, get it BIG, smooth it out with a round brush while blow drying then go in with a 1 inch curling iron. Funny, my hair won't hold "fake" curls, only the kinky, frizzy natural ones!

@PointeShoesTutus: gorgeous!!! You might have the prettiest red hair I've ever seen!!!

@HLK208: that's how mine is!! I am going to try though, see if I can make my hair hot, not repulsive

@grizz: Pretty! I've been thinking about growing my hair out a bit over the winter for a change (and to make ponytails easier).
pear / 1769 posts
My hair has a lot of body and is wavy. I prefer a straightener to curl my hair. but I'm too lazy to do more than put a brush through it most days. I posted a pic a few weeks ago of it curled on IG.
