I started taking a photo a day as my new years resolution last year. Since then I wanted to improve my photography skills, and that included editing. I do edit most of my pictures..... but I'm self taught and my skills are very limited.

Nope, what you see is what you get. I'm not artistic at all, and don't have a very good eye for that type of stuff.

I edit my favorites and leave the rest. I use Lightroom to balance out the tone/color/etc and then run them through photoshop for the fine detail.
Like @artbee: I am self-taught and I have limited knowledge.

@zippylef: Why lightroom instead of photoshop for tone and color?

I edit in Iphoto... I want to get a better software, but that hasn't happened yet.
pear / 1664 posts
Yep I edit everything in lightroom. Then photoshop if i need more detailed edits.

@artbee: Lightroom as better auto settings than Photoshop, which is better for beginners like me. I adjust the exposure, vibrance, tone, clarity, etc with it. I find it easier to navigate because it's set up specifically for photo editing rather than general use like PS (I have CS3).
I like Photoshop for removing blemishes, evening skin tone, etc. Lightroom does those things too, but I haven't learned how to use those tools yet.

I edit them if I really feel like the lighting/exposure is off, or if I plan to print and frame it. I use Paint.Net. It was a free download and it does a great job.
pineapple / 12526 posts
@artbee: I downloaded mine for free.... because I'm a bad person and my husband taught me how.

Not very often! I'm not a fan of pictures with too much editing...especially when people go crazy with Photoshop actions!
pomelo / 5331 posts
Everything that goes up on my blog gets pretty minimal editing unless I shot something crooked, etc. I do a resize, slight saturation, and slight contrast action in Photoshop. The funny thing is I'm trying to learn Lightroom but it's so confusing to me -- and normally that's where they recommend you start!
My main issue right now is that my original product is so crappy. I feel like I can't get at the crisp, clear photos I want with my current camera -- everything I shoot is clipped. It's so frustrating, I really can't wait for the day when we can buy an SLR! Maybe it will be my Christmas present to myself...

@ladyfingers: My DH bought me a Rebel T3i for Mother's Day and there is NO way I could go back to a P&S. The difference is absolutely ridiculous. I'm getting a new lense for Christmas! Can't wait.
For example, these three shots, the first was taken with my crappy P&S, the 2nd is unedited with my Rebel and the 3rd is edited with my Rebel:

Nope. I'm lucky enough to have pictures! I don't have much time and am lazy to learn how to edit pictures right now.
pomelo / 5331 posts
@zippylef: Good to know you like the T3i! I'm trying to decide between that and the T2i. Your shots look great -- what lens(es) do you currently use?

I use Picasa to crop, resize, straighten, and occasionally adjust the lighting or red eyes, but that's about the extent of it.

I used to use picnic to edit my pics, and I just found out about picmonkey But I dont edit every single picture, only certains ones.

@ladyfingers: I use the kit lens at the moment. I am going to buy the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. I read a ton of reviews and everything said it was the best lens for the price and it's awesome for beginners and those just starting to build their kits.

i haven't used my dslr in so long. the pics are so much better, but it's tough to carry it around with two kids. i'm always holding olive since she can't walk.
but when i do use my dslr, yes i edit every picture that goes online in photoshop!
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@artbee: since you have photoshop, you can do simple quick edits using ACR without having to buy lightroom (adjusting exposure, white balance, etc.). lightroom is nice for the quickness and ease, and especially the ability to sort, but PS is expensive enough as it is!

Ooh now I want Lightroom. I have an ancient version of Photoshop and was going to ask DH to find a new version that I could download (fine, I am also a bad person) but it sounds like Lightroom is the way to go, since I want simple and I don't have a Mac.
Right now, my Iphone 4 (not even 4s) is my camera, so I edit the photos I like in camera+ based on the recommendations here. But it's hard to tell when I'm overediting them and they just look fake. I'm hopefully getting the Canon Rebel T3 for Christmas so I want to be able to make minor edits when I actually can take good photos.

i edit my photos in Lightroom (which is what we used at my photography school). i have a lot of Lightroom presets saved on my computer so i just have to click a preset, make some minor adjustments, and i'm done editing - quick and simple.

@zippylef: i started off with a 50mm/f1.8. i highly recommend it. my photo teacher always told us to "zoom with our feet"!
pineapple / 12526 posts
@birdieputt: How do presets work and where do you find them? A friend told me that she uses them but I am just learning the software, so I haven't delved into it yet. Also, good to know that you recommend the lens! I'm getting it in November before I fly home for the holidays. SO excited!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
I'm still a newb, but I edit any photo I'm going to post somewhere (like here, my blog, Facebook, etc) with Lightroom.
@zippylef: I also have the 50mm/f1.8 and I love it. Definitely recommend it! Especially for portrait shots.
cherry / 146 posts
@zippylef: i got my presets from a local pro photographer. but you can directly download presets that you find online or buy LR presets software (i.e. Kubota).
pomelo / 5866 posts
@zippylef: That shot is a beauty of a beauty!
I rarely ever edit and if I do it's just basic Iphoto, crop and sometimes color. Oh and recently I started straightening horizons.

@zippylef - love your three-pic example! I hate lugging around the DSLR but you are right, the difference is astounding!
@art bee - I just use iPhoto for pics I want to post online generally to crop & use the "enhance" if it helps make it look better.

Another fan of Lightroom here! I edit most of my photos (my husband taught me how, thankfully). The only time I don't is if, for example, I'm uploading like 100 photos of a party to a Facebook album. Otherwise, at the very least I use Lightroom for the white balance, and to bump up the saturation/contrast a little.
GOLD / pear / 1845 posts
Anything good I do. I'm not a perfect photographer, so I usually tweak at least the exposure and white balance in photoshop.
