I called mine today. I call her around once a month to catch up.

@mrbee: We're pretty close. I call her Mom. I definitely lucked out in the MIL department.

I talk to my MIL about once a week! We live 5 minutes from my in-laws and 2,000 miles from my parents, so I talk her more frequently than my own mom! (just typing that makes me feel guilty!)
Guess I should call my mom.

No way. I have been making an effort to have a good relationship though. Our previous history is not very good. We've gotten together several times since being in GA.

@Leialou: wow, how long after you met did you drop the M word?
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Nope since her English is broken and my Mandarin is not that good (nor is hers bc she speaks a dialect).

@mrbee: 6.5 years. She asked me to a couple months ago! I couldn't have done it otherwise.

Nope never. When my husband hands me the phone to talk to her and give her a greeting I last all of "hi how are you? Merry Christmas, ok bye".

I talk to my MIL on the phone around once a week. I call her "mom" out of respect--and because my parents always called their parents in law mom and dad! She and I have grown closer over the past few months as she comes to watch my LO on Fridays. It's a long commute for her, but it means so much to is-and to her-that she is able to do it.

MIL and I text fairly often, and I e-mail her sometimes. We have a good relationship but DH has a long chat with her every Sunday so I get all the details from him that way.
DH chats with my mom for about 10 seconds at a time because they don't speak English but they ADORE each other. My mom loves DH more than she loves me.

Yes, I consider mine to be a really good friend, I know I'm very lucky. We text a few times a week and every 3-4 weeks we have a marathon phone catch up session. On the periphery I usually talk to her for a few minutes during my husband's weekly calls to them.

No, but we live 5 minutes away from them so we see them plenty and don't really need catch up calls. Though I did go visit her in the hospital (alone since DH wasn't feeling well) after her knee surgery a few days ago.

@Leialou: so sweet!! What an inspirational in-law relationship!
I called Bee's mom nothing for 5 years (just avoided using any name to refer to her). Once we had Charlie, I started calling her Grandma... just like Charlie did! What a relief it was to have a name of some kind to use!

Never have. We chat a lot in person though while DH is off doing something with FIL.

Oh lordy no.
@mrbee: same. She hasn't had a name for 4 years, but now I can just call her Gram!

Nope! Sometimes we email and we chat when we are together, but not otherwise

@mrbee: my husband doesn't use a name for either of my parents either!
While DH & I were dating I would call her about once a month & we would text at least once a week but then we lived with her for a good 8 months (it sucked!) & now we live a 1 minute walk away from her so I never ever call her unless I need something & vice versa. I usually go over & let her see DD & catch up about once a week, even though living with her has made me have to work very hard to tolerate her.

No. Although I'll text or fb her pregnancy updates occasionally, or a pic of the pets or something. I get along well with her but I"m not big on just calling up anyone to chat. She calls us every month or two and we always put her on speaker and talk to her at the same time then.

I try to every so often. She calls me every week to chat, so I try to take the initiative sometimes. She really wants us to have a good relationship but she can be overbearing. I try to just go with the flow...

Yup! We probably talk once a week or so. I called her on FaceTime on Monday so that she could see LO too. @Leialou: It's so wonderful to have that kind of in-law relationship! I feel lucky too!

Yup! I have an awesome MIL, and call her more frequently than I call my own mom! We probably talk every other or every third day, and daily via facebook chat/text messages.

@Leialou: You really did luck out!
I emailed mine today. We email pretty often...I prefer it that way because I would have to hang up on her to get her off the phone.

It would never even occur to me.
@leialou, @mrbee: DH has tossed around the idea of calling my parents mom and dad. They'd get such a kick out of it if he did. They love him and always sign stuff to him/us as from mom and dad.
