Dishwasher, yes. Washing machine no, but only because I hate for damp clothes to sit overnight! I do avoid leaving the house while the dryer is running... I'm always afraid it will catch fire somehow.

I did, especially the dishwasher. The washing machine not so much...but I did program it so that it would kick off at 5:30 in the morning. I guess that means it was "on" all night, though.

All the time. I start it and head to bed. If it is the washer I try to make sure the clothes are atleast is the dryer first. The only downside is our dryer has an automatic dewrinkle setting that will turn on ever half hour or so and run for 5 minutes if you don't go stop it. I haven't figured out how to disable that yet.

We always run them at night or early morning. Really, even if we did run them during the day time, it's not like I would be right there watching it if something happened. I often start the dishwasher and then go upstairs or start up the clothes washer/dryer and then go downstairs. So I probably wouldn't see if they started smoking.

Yep, pretty much exclusively. We use the "four hour delay" setting to run our dishwasher, so we load it in the evening and set it to run overnight. Our province has "time of use" billing for hydro (electricity) which is really stupid, and means that rates are much lower in the evening/overnight than during the day.

We run the dishwasher at night all the time, and both charge our cell phones every single night. I feel like this article is totally alarmist. Of course, manufaturers are going to say that the operating manual says not to run something unattended, because they have to cover their asses in case of being sued.

There are tens of millions of people running their dishwashers and charging their cell phone over night all over the US and there's been...1 death. So if there's 300 million people here, that's a 1 in 300 million chance of dying.

I'll take that chance.

Honestly, we are out of the house for 12 hours during the day. I would rather be home and wake up in the middle of the night to have it happen (flood, fire, etc) overnight then come home to it.

I used to do this (you get electricity at a cheaper rate through the night here) but DH moans that his clothes smell musty if they sit in the machine for too long so I gave it up. Plus, I'm dreadful for forgetting to empty the load in the morning so I'd end up washing the clothes twice anyway...!

We charge our phones at night though..... scary stuff.

the dishwasher and washer no....dryer, sometimes. it's sometimes left running to finish drying. and our cell phones are always charging at night. just one more thing to worry about!

I did that with the dishwasher all the time! Now, I am the dishwasher, so no, lol.

Not with the washer, though...I like to get things in the dryer. But, I do with the dryer! oops!

I have read this.. and I don't leave the house if any of them are running, but will run them overnight. The dryer/washer are off our room so if they blew up.. I"d know quickly!

We definitely run both while we sleep. In our last apartment the dishwasher was so loud we would only run it while we slept and we'd have to close the bedroom door. Now it's pretty quiet and we can run any of them during the day without it being disturbing so I suppose we really should, at least get in the habit before baby gets here and I get more paranoid.

I am not going to stop charging my phone at night though. I try not to do it all the time because I've heard it isn't good for the battery, but that's it.

It's either running at night or before we leave the house to go somewhere.

Nope, but only because we're in an apartment and the neighbours would hate that. Not really any safety consideration.

Dishwasher. My mom warned me years ago about running the dryer while out of the house or asleep. I follow her lead and stop it when I leave for somewhere.

@regberadaisy: we have an LG washing machine and you can set a timer for when you want it to start. I always put a load of laundry in at bedtime and set the delay timer so the load starts about an hour before I get up. That way the wash cycle is done by the time I'm up and I just throw it in the dryer and fold it after breakfast. It is super convenient.

I run my dishwasher at night too! Bc that's when it's full and also bc it's loud. We run it as we head up for bed so we're usually not asleep for at least another hour or two but this makes me think we need to buy a new dishwasher that is quiet so we don't mind running it while we're downstairs.

My SIL's friend had this happen to her but I just figured it was a random freak accident...no one was home when the dishwasher was running but her house burned to the ground
