Do you think the prices are better than a traditional supermarket or Target/Walmart? I haven't been to an Aldi in a lonnng time. I never had a quarter on me for the cart when I would go!

Yes! Things may go on sale cheaper occasionally at other stores, but Aldi's is consistently cheaper in my area. I love there food and quality. I asked one time what day their deliveries come in and I always shop the day after that for the best quality and selection of produce.

I just stopped in for the first time ever yesterday! I didn't get anything because Trader Joe's was one floor up (supposedly they're owned by the same company) but I was just curious. What do you all get there?
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
I don't usually but the quality of produce at ours isn't that great.
coconut / 8498 posts
@locavore_mama: I don't usually for the same reason.
I will stop in for staples, as it's ~3 minutes from home vs. the 15+ minutes our regular store is.

We got one in the last year or so but I've never been! It's kind of out of the way!

One just opened in my area last year (?) but I've never been. My grandma said the one near her was kind of blah...especially compared to Wegman's!
nectarine / 2886 posts
@swedishfish: Oooh, you cant compare anything to wegmans! The best grocery. Ever.

@Pepper: Someone told me that so I was intrigued and went in! I heard they dont accept credit cards? So strange!
GOLD / coconut / 8266 posts
@betsyboop: I know, I keep emailing them to open one on Long Island!

@betsyboop: They don't accept credit cards to help keep their prices low - cc companies charge retailers fees. I always forget and it's such a hassle!
My husband is a die hard Aldi fan. He worked there all through college, and they were very good to him. Their new organic line has some good stuff!

@betsyboop: Wait, they don't accept credit cards? How do you pay? Do you need cash, or does a check work?
We have one opening up right near us. I had never heard of them before, but now I'm curious and will at least check it out...

@grizz: yes!
I normally have not but their new organics have drawn me in. If they continue to expand that line I'd make it my primary grocery store. I will admit the cart thing is annoying in the cold juggling a LO.

I buy the same items there eggs, bread, bag of potatoes, squash, green or red peppers, and mushroom. They have cool seasonal items and frozen entrees too. It depends on which Aldi's you go to because some are cleaner than others even though the layout is identical. I never really need a cart. I don't buy enough for a cart. I usually leave LO at home with daddy when I go food shopping so I am quick too. I put everything into a reusable grocery bag and take it to the checkout that way.
papaya / 10473 posts
Oh yes, I forgot to mention - bring your own bags and/or boxes! They charge a little bit for theirs. Their bags are thick and reusable though. We've used the same ones over and over.

@scg00387: how are their organic prices? There is one a few miles from our house. I should see if they started carrying the organic line.
They're actually originally FROM Germany. I've been to one in Munich and it's way more awesome than the US versions!

Yeah, I great produce from there all the time. I like their organics too.

Cash is king at Aldi to keep prices low. Cash or debit cards. I LOVE how fast they are at checking you out and I have a few times now taken things back that weren't good quality and received my money back, plus a replacement.
I love Aldi's. My husband and I shop there weekly. We take a refrigerator bag or two with us and anything we can't find there, we go to Walmart for. Aldi's is 99% of the time cheaper than any other grocery store. You can't compare it to stores like Wegman's and Harris Teeter because it doesn't try to compete with stores like those.

You guys have inspired me to check out the one nearby!
@mediagirl: Are Wegman's and Harris Teeter traditional grocery stores? We don't have them in my area.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Pepper: Wegmans is a local NY family owned chain much like Trader Joes but much more awesome. they have been expanding quite a bit in the NE in recent years..
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Pepper: I see those two as "fancy" grocery stores. What are your local stores? We have Lowes foods and Food Lion in my town. The closest "fancy" grocery is about 15 minutes out of town - Harris Teeter or Whole Foods.

We had them at home in MO and they have them here in England too. Good prices and their produce, at least here, is really good.
honeydew / 7687 posts
@locavore_mama: the organic prices are significantly cheaper than my local grocery store so far; .50 cents or more cheaper per item. We don't have a whole foods or anything similar to compare to.
pomegranate / 3414 posts
We shop there all the time. I found that the prices are 10-20 cents less than major stores but we eat store brand, it is considerably cheaper than name brands. I always keep a quarter or two in my car's ashtray to make sure I have one for the carts.

I used to shop at the European Aldi. It's basically imported private labelled goods.
I have yet to see one in the part of the US where I live. We have Trader Joe's though.

@Pepper: they're actually owned by two brothers!
We have one but I never think to go there!

My mom always shopped at Aldis when I was growing up. We were a large family and they were the best prices she could find.
I WISH we had one here, but as it is, I have to drive 75 miles one way to get to a Wal-Mart or any other supermarket. If I'm going to drive that far (I often drive 100 miles in the other direction so I can go to a supermarket and hit up a Target too), I wish I had some more selection in cheap and/or cool/fancy grocery stores like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods or something.

@mediagirl: Haha we have Giant Eagle and Shop n Save. Definitely a local thing. We also have Whole Foods!

@swedishfish: there is one in Long Island (you mean NY right?). I just passed it today going to Smith Haven Mall.
clementine / 830 posts
@swedishfish: oh nvm, I thought you meant Aldi not Wegman. Still no Wegmans on the island that I know of! Sorry for the tease!
pomegranate / 3053 posts
I went there once looking for something and they didn't have it. It's a very non-traditional supermarket. I just found out they own Trader Joe's! I LOVE TJ's but not a fan of Aldi. They are so different... But I was spoiled with great markets like Whole Foods and Wegmans when I was in the states. There were about 6 or 7 markets within a ten minute drive from where we live and that doesn't include Target and Walmart which both have groceries as well and most times cheaper than your traditional supermarkets. In Asia it's a whole new ballgame here. It's SO hard to find things all in one place now. I'll manage and there are other perks but still. U.S. supermarkets rock!
