I expect hard times, but try so hard not to dwell on it so i dont waste the good timed worrying, but it is so hard! Every day i realize more and more how lucky i am in so many different large and small ways

@MamaMoose: You hit the nail on the head. I think when people say we are lucky, it diminishes the hard work that we put into our lives. Of course I think we are fortunate but I don't think that luck is involved.

I don't really believe in luck. However, we are very fortunate, and have been blessed with some incredible opportunities. And at the same time, we have been through some hard times as well. I expect things to fluctuate.

@Greentea: @Mae: You are both right - my husband and I are lucky to have been born with very supportive kind parents and I know that! I guess I think when people say you're lucky it feels like it diminishes what hard work we have put into our lives. Also, sure, my husband is lucky he had his parents to pay for school...but his father died very tragically and a lawsuit over the death is what paid his way through medical school. Is that lucky? I don't think so. I realize I have a doctor complex to a certain extent...but it's because I don't think most people understand how ridiculously hard my husband has worked and what he has sacrificed in his personal life to get to the point he is at. (And, for what it's worth, he is 33 and still hasn't gotten a "real" paycheck yet).

@winniebee: People tend to focus too much on the end result (and, more specifically, on their version of what they perceive the end result to be), and discount the never ending work and sacrifices that were made--and continue to be made--in order to achieve the end result. I also think that people naturally assume it's *happily ever after* once you have reached your goal . . . when in reality, it is just another phase of a long line of sacrifices, only (hopefully!) this go 'round, with better pay/benefits.

@travellingbee: This is me!!! I feel like I've never really had to deal with anything THAT bad and I'm scared that it's coming!

@lamariniere: totally. I almost wonder if people that don't think certain things are luck... if they just haven't experienced bad luck? (Or forces beyond their control or what have you.)

@Bao: thanks for putting some things into perspective that i've been feeling crappy about. i am totally lucky and more realistically, totally blessed.

@Greentea: I do wonder too. Luck to me isn't about having a fancy job or lots of money. Sure those things are nice, but having a low drama, stable life is also pretty lucky.

Absolutely. I believe in luck. Some things all come down to dumb luck - there's no rhyme or reason.

DH and I think that we totally lucked out with DD. We're still trying to figure out how we'd gotten so lucky!

no, i am certainly grateful for things, but i don't consider myself very lucky. i'm actually quite unlucky, whenever there is an opportunity for something to go wrong, it generally does. it shocks me when things go smoothly! i might not be lucky in a lot of ways, but i'm grateful for what i do have and at peace with my situation.

I think we go through ups and downs and whenever one of them goes on a long time I start to wonder when it will end.

Financially I get what some of you are saying (my parents were poor growing up and are now well off, an they worked very hard for that, so I do believe hard work is a huge factor) but I think at least some part of it is luck. Dh and I got out of college and relocated (fil was ill among other reasons) in 2010, and there weren't a lot of opportunities..I feel very lucky that we aren't struggling and we can afford, albeit not with fully funded college educations or whatever, our family. We also have very generous parents who have gifted us some major things (for example our tuitions!)

I think having an appreciation for the good luck times helps us have hope and get through the tougher times!

@lamariniere: I agree! Maybe I just get stressed out easily but I definitely value the low drama stable life over lots of money.

I don't believe in luck really, but I know what you mean. I've never experienced any major tragedies. Statistically speaking it seems something is bound to come my way sometime soon.
