my 9 month old is playing in the playpen right now and occasionally yells for me, but then sits back down and keeps playing. I'm in the same room but drinking my coffee in the corner, ha! feeling a little guilty I'm not entertaining her but....coffee.

Meh, not really. I think, as a society, we are too involved in entertaining our kids. I think it's good for them to entertain themselves and learn to do that! E comes up with the funniest little things when left to her own devices.

Not when I need to get stuff done. I'll usually talk/sing to her while I'm working, but sometimes, sister needs to play alone while mama cleans up, cooks, etc. If I'm not actively doing something and just relaxing, then I'll play with her any time she asks.

I too think that independent play is needed and good for them! No one can tend to a child every single minute. She is not in distressed, and you're still right there, so it's all good!

@blackbird: Seriously. The stuff that comes out of L's mouth, from his own imagination, is absolutely hilarious!!
ETA: He found a little sword in our halloween stuff and started walking around saying "I WILL USE THIS!". Even though he doesn't quite know what a sword is for! LOL

I don't feel guilty. I don't think my LOs benefit from being entertained every second.

I would do it if I could! My LO just started watching Daniel Tiger for about 30 seconds to 1 minute at a time and I LOVE every one of those seconds!! We also both WOH so sometiems in the morning he is confined to his room to "play" while we get ready. Of course it usually results in him screaming for us the whole time and tearing his room apart, but he wakes up at 5am and at some point we need to shower!

Nope, not even a little bit. I think it's an important life skill to be able to entertain yourself. I just wish E would do it more, lol (seriously, I would love to be able to drink a cup of coffee without E climbing on me or demanding I play with him).

When you said you "leave your LO to their own devices", I thought you meant you gave them your iPhone! And I never feel guilty about that ha...

Glad I'm not alone! Haha. I hide from my 3 year old on the regular to stuff my face in peace. I let her play solo a ton as a baby, she's excellent at it now.

Nope. He likes to toddle off to the living room to destroy things and I'm happy to pour myself a cup of coffee and zone out. He doesn't "play" with me he just hands me things anyway so he's happy if I'm just sitting there.

No she so rarely wants to play alone that when she does, I enjoy it!

I love when my 21 month old will entertain himself - it makes me so happy to sit in the basement with him reading a book while he plays on his own. I definitely think a bit of independence is a great thing to instill in them.
