Now that LO is babbling more and seems like she might/should be saying words, i feel like if i'm quiet all day that i'm doing something wrong! i talk to her about random stuff and explain what i see, read books, etc, but sometimes i just want us to eat in silence.

Yes! Sometimes I feel like an idiot, but I try . . .it's hard to break out of my habit of quietly working through my stress (from the work day). I will say when I am at a loss, I find myself reverting to songs to help bridge the gap.

Yes. I am naturally a pretty quiet person, so it's hard for me to just talk at her. I try, but sometimes I would rather just observe all the crazy things DD is doing. I need to try harder, though, because it seems like every time someone mentions a kid who was delayed in talking, they say something like, "Well, you know, [kid's mom] is really quiet." Ack.

I don't because I'm a blabbermouth but I know DH feels pressure (also because I apply the pressure, I'm always like, "TALK TO HER FOR GOD'S SAKE!"

I'm a talkative person... I always seem to make audible comments about everything I do and see anyway, so it came natural for me. (Probably annoying for everyone else)

Yes, but it also keeps me from going a little insane being home alone all day. And she smiles at me when I talk I her so that's a good incentive.
My bigger problem is when she isn't with me and I still do it. We went to the grocery store the other day and Dh had Lo in the stroller, I had the shopping cart. I couldn't find them at one point and I said "Now where is daddy?" Out loud, to my cart of groceries.

I'm a talker so I think it's wonderful to have such a captive audience for my random musings!! What really surprises me is how much my husband talks to her. He's a quiet guy but I often hear him talking to her when they are alone together in another part of the house.

Yes. And I hate talking. I like silence and to talk to myself in my head. So, it is SO HARD for me to break that an to talk out loud to her. It feels weird and sounds weird and makes me feel crazy...but I know she needs me to do it.

@Foodnerd81: I've so done that. And it's usually some variation of "where's daddy?" Or "look for daddy"! It's also happened when I'm out alone. I feel like an idiot!

Haha we talk ALL THE TIME, so there is no fear she's not hearing plenty of conversation. She's a blabbermouth too so we have "conversations" all the time

When he was a newborn, we watched everyone walking down our street and narrated it. I would narrate Veronica Mars and Ina Garten to him since that's what I watched during my maternity leave.
We still narrate everything for him, but now it's a case of what he wants and expressing his needs. My mom actually gave us parenting props for explaining the correct fruit or something like that when he got it wrong. We just say the right thing and say it a few times.

I feel a lot of pressure to talk all the time because it does not come naturally to me. I feel even more pressure now that LO just started a daycare where they speak Mandarin. I think I will feel guilty if she starts speaking Mandarin before English.

Yes I do feel pressure...I'm not a big talker most of the time. It has been much more gratifying lately though since LO is talking back to me and repeating words!

@LuLu Mom: I like to respond to her random noises as if we are having a conversation, but for some reason the only 'conversations' we have are like junior high gossip. Like if she is laying on her playmat, my responses are things like "What? The monkey said that? What did the lion do??" Poor kid.

I pretty much just give her a running commentary of what's going on around us, so I find it pretty easy. In fact, I now find it more difficult to remember not to be the crazy lady talking to myself in the rare instance that I'm NOT with the baby.

This is why when she was younger, i would read her articles from a magazine. I didn't feel stupid this way, and one time i finished a book in one week because i read the book out loud!

Yes! I like silence when at home but I really try to explain what I'm doing. I'm not quiet when I'm out of the house (usually) so I talk to her while shopping or playing at the playground.

I definitely do! I try to talk as much as I can throughout the day, and she's in that funny stage where she babbles back and it sounds like she's responding so it's not that tough. Sometimes while I'm cooking or doing something that requires concentration I realize I'm too quiet. I try to sing a song or put on music if I really need to concentrate.

I talk to her constantly about everything. She loves it! But sometimes yeah I need a minute
to just relax and not feel the pressure.

Ugh, yes! I'm a moderate talker but I hate making small talk and talking just for the sake of talking.
When my LO was really little and we would take walks around the neighbourhood, I would start talking about the trees and flowers and plants we'd see but realize that I knew absolutely nothing about them.

@birdofafeather: I felt weird talking to him all day before 6 months! But now I feel bad if I don't talk to him since he is talking now and me talking to him helps him learn. At breakfast this morning I realized I hadn't said anything in awhile so we started singing songs

he has play time alone while i watch him and i feel guilty that im not talking/interacting with him if it goes too long. he loves independent play but i also dont want it to be too much either. ohhh the mom guilt.

Yeah, we go out a lot and I realized that I don't talk to her very much when we are out! But her sister blabs to her for a good 6 hours a day or so. Takes the pressure off me.

I'm naturally a quiet person but I feel like I'm always talking to her. Even when I let her play alone and I'm doing some work at the computer, I feel bad and start saying random things in her direction - ha!

@Andrea: one day she'll be the one talking her little sibling's ear off! i know i was! i didn't even know my sister could talk til she was 4 or 5! i told my mom that she didn't know how to talk!

I talk to her constantly. It was a little odd in the beginning but I kept forcing myself to talk outloud to her. Now it comes really naturally, and the other day I was shopping alone for the first time in forver and it felt so weird to not have her to talk to.

Just throwing this out there-- Lorelei has heard WAY less words than Ellie ever did (I talked to Ellie constantly, read to hear all the time...) and Lorelei is ultra chatty. Yes, it is important for them to hear language, but infants are also so well-adapted to acquiring language. So don't let it be something that gives you stress, or feel pressure to talk all the time. Just do what comes naturally. If that means some time just being together quietly, that's okay.

Not really, because I used to talk to myself out loud when no one was in the house, so now I do it without feeling so weird!

yes--sometimes i realize i've just been letting him do his own thing and i'm like oh shit am i supposed to be working on his language development. it's hard for me to maintain a monologue.
