I was surprised to see so many get a tax return. Maybe only those who get returns answered? Having a baby this year way lowered how much we'll owe...but of course there is the added expense of a chid, ha!

I always get a return, mostly because I get work to take off extra taxes to cover what I would owe from my side business.

We were shocked to find that we got a return last year since I'm an independent contractor and I don't get any taxes taken out. We have investment property which helps, I think, and this year we'll have the two kids to claim as dependents... woot woot! I think because of that we'll get another return this year by the skin of our teeth. Of course it won't be much but hey, it's better than paying!!

We pay more in taxes now than I MADE 5 years ago; and we still always owe more.

I always get a return. I purposely claim limited exemptions so work will take out max taxes because I hate to owe!

In the past I've always owed, but since buying the house, we get a return.

We usually always get a return!
@purplepumps: how does buying a house help? Just curious bc we bought a house last year and wondering how it will affect our taxes?!

I'd so much rather invest my own money rather than have a refund, so we tend to adjust our withholding so that we either break even or owe, but as we've advanced in our careers we mostly owe.

@mrsaudi: Huge tax deduction! You can deduct all the interest and property taxes.

@PurplePumps: Yay! We are hoping to buy a house this year or next year. Glad to hear it helps something.

We usually get a pretty decent return. As much as it doesn't make sense to give the government a tax free loan every year, I really like living without the money, then getting it back as a happy gift right around my birthday

I have always gotten a refund for as long as I can remember. But I'm not so sure about this year.

I usually used to break even then in 2010 I paid and last year, 2011, I got 200 back! But we’ll see what this year brings. We do have a baby and it will be the first time husband and I file together (:

We always get a return. We've been students every year until this year though so we might get less... but it's the first year we have a child, so we might get more haha. I honestly have no idea.

@MamaMoose: same...mostly why we always get a return.
On turbo tax a few years ago, we were going to have to owe but then we found a tax consultant who did a more thorough job and we haven't paid since.

Hmmmm.
This probably is a stupid question but are you more likely to owe the more money you make?
I have always gotten a return.

I have always gotten a return. We have an accountant do our taxes for us, and he seems to do a pretty good job!

We always got money back until last year. Both of our jobs were higher paying than previously and it was our first year filing jointly- a double whammy. Hoping we get a return this year, but probably not.

@rainbowsprinkles it usually depends on how much you have withheld from you paycheck. When you get a return, you have allowed the government to take more taxes ( a loan) out of your check when you get paid, thus, by getting a return you get the money back you owed them. When you owe, typically less gets taken out each check. Of course, deductions and credits have a lot to do with how much you owe or get back also.

We've always gotten a return, and last year it was a pretty decent sized one.

we always owe and in recent years, it has been quite a bit. it is painful.
the CFO of my company once told me that if you get a tax return it is like you are giving the government an interest free loan. not sure if that is entirely accurate, but it made me feel better that i always owe.

If it's just me, I always get a return. Since owning our business, we've generally had to owe.

We always owe (about 100ish?) on state taxes, get a small local return, and get about $200 back on federal.

Depends on the year. Since buying a home, we've gotten a return (interest is deductible). I think we'll get one this year since I didn't get paid for 3 months while on maternity leave and we have the child credit now.

The last few years we have gotten really large returns, and the same thing will happen this year. One year DH owed around $500 and he was so pissed, so he changed deductions to take the max out, so that we get a return every year. It seriously irritates me because we could have more money in our bank account each month instead of waiting until the end of the year, and it would make things a lot better for us. He just doesn't seem to see it that way....
On another note, getting our large return this year will allow us to pay off ALL of our credit card debt!! I cannot wait to file our taxes this year!!

We used to get a large return when we were both grad students. In 2010 we owed and in 2011 we broke even (we would have had to pay if not for my student loan debt. yay?) This year we are sure we are going to get some money back thanks to our new dependent!

We got a huge return last year, ($9k) because as an apprentice DH is considered a FT student. I've been a student for the past 6 years, and he was considered a FT student this year til November when he got his license! We also have LO this year. Not sure how it'll look next year though without the student benefit!

I always owe somehow. I don't understand taxes at all. We went to a new accountant last year though who told us to switch to "single 0" AND we bought an apartment, so hopefully those two things will help us ate least owe less than the $7K we had to pay last year.

I think we get a giant return this year...coincidentally, right before LO is due and I quit my job. So hopefully it will cover hospital bills!
