DH and I've given up fast food/takeout/eating out the past few years. We will do it again during the lenten season. With the exception of wendy's fish sandwiches (for DH) on Fridays.

Nope, I'm not religious so I never see the point. But I am looking forward to fish fry Fridays! It's huge around here.

I do! I generally give up things like candy/sweets/deserts, since those are my weakness
This year, since we are TTC, it will also make things easier to explain when I don't drink booze or coffee... "oh, I gave up alcohol for lent!"

Last year, I gave up Facebook, and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. The break was exactly what I needed! Even now, I don't go back much.
On the other hand, I found HB during my FB hiatus, so I did worry that I was bending the rules a bit But I think all in all, HB is much better for me than FB!
Not sure what I'll do this year.

I usually don't as an adult. When I was a Catholic school kid, I did. I think my WW challenge will be not to have donuts until Easter. My last donut ban lasted about a month. I'm hoping that a Lenten one will help get me to goal weight and beyond.

Last year I gave up soda- the year before coffee- the year before dessert. DH always gives up red meat (which means I basically do too!!)
Don't know what we are going to do this year! Perhaps I should do caffeine.... the thought makes me shudder!

DH grew up Catholic so he doesn't do meat on Fridays, so we stick to fish. But we've never really given anything up, although I might have to give it a try. He's not Catholic anymore but it's a rule he doesn't want to break & I resepect that.

I gave up candy one year, pretty much the only time I've ever actually given something up. I might do it again this year. I'm not Catholic, but having a reason and a set time frame to avoid a bad habit seems to work better than doing it on my own.

No, I would rather spend the energy on doing something positive, like volunteering or improving myself.

I'm not Catholic so I bend the rules, but rather than giving something up I committed to doing something to improve myself. For example, leaving the office no later than 6:30, in order to improve my work/life balance. So, I guess you could say that I "gave up" working past 6:30

I usually give up soda...I'm not sure what I'll give up this year. I should probably decide.

@swedishfish: I gave up soda in high school, and then never went back to drinking it! I have it occasionally now depending on a pizza night or two, but it's weird how it stuck!

@mrsjyw: I did the same thing until giving birth...then I needed the caffeine! I used to allow myself soda 4 times a year because I love it so much.

@swedishfish: coffee addict here, def need the caffeeine!

Last year I gave up soft drinks and ended up giving it up for good. I always drink unsweetened ice tea now.

I try to find something to "give up" that would give me more time to pray or read a religious book/apostolic exhortation/encyclical. Lent usually ends up being more about "adding God in" than taking something out.

@honeybear: I think that is the best response I have ever heard regarding Lent.

@honeybear: I agree with @locavore_mama: that is a great response! I try every year to "give something up" but am never successful maybe this year I will add God in

@locavore_mama: @Mamaof2: Thanks, ladies. First, I can't take credit for that perspective, I've had a number of awesome priests and pastors tell me that "adding God in" is the purpose of Lent (sacrifice is an important spiritual practice, but the practice is intended to open us up to closer friendship with God by freeing us of worldly attachments). Second, I will admit that I have not been awesome at the execution of this goal every day of Lent for the past few years. I can get the praying in, but reading weighty fare has proven to be a challenge when my son is dancing around wanting my attention and the dishes are piling up in the sink! I think maybe I need to just make LO part of it and (re)start reading some basic Christian texts to him.

@honeybear: I really appciate this perspective. Over past Lenten seasons, I have tried to do some reading and focused prayers, but have been inconsistent with it. I think I will try to do them more this Lenten season as well as giving something up, forgoing meat on Fridays, etc. Thank you for the kick in the pants I needed

@honeybear: I try to do a little of both. I get a lot out of the fasting aspect of it. Although I do think it's a shame so many people are like "I'm gonna diet for Lent!" because I think it really cheapens an important spiritual practice.
Maybe I should give up FB and install a prayer app on my phone instead!! And use that whenever I'm tempted...

@jedeve: I agree, fasting is incredibly effective as a spiritual practice (and SO hard!). There was a really good prayer website run by Irish Jesuits I used to use, and probably should again! It's here: http://www.sacredspace.ie

I do the Busted Halo eat/pray/give calendar and it has forever changed the way I give things up for lent. It's amazing!
eggplant / 11408 posts
@honeybear: love this! One year, we tried to read Evening Prayer every night. We didn't always succeed, but it was a good reminder of what the season is about.
@jedeve: giving up Facebook last year was SUCH a good idea for me. I was forever comparing myself, and it was making me bitter. I'm so glad I did it!
@matador84: Busted Halo is the best!

Bleh I am terrible and either forget that Lent started, or can't decide what to give up (aka I don't want to give up anything)! Or I would give up lofty things like attitudes which is hard to track haha. I might attempt to give up FB though.. Lately certain things I see on FB gets to me and I really don't need that negativity.
